John Woodvine

John Woodvine (born 21 July 1929 in South Shields, County Durham, England) is a veteran British actor whose career spans more than seven decades across stage, screen, and radio. The son of Rose (née Kelly) and John Woodvine, he attended Lord Williams's School in Thame before honing his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1953. Immediately after his training he joined the Old Vic company, where he performed a myriad of Shakespearean roles—from Macbeth and Hamlet to The Winter's Tale—and quickly became known for his robust voice and commanding presence. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Ian McKellen and Judi Dench in the acclaimed 1976 production of Macbeth where he portrayed Banquo. His theatrical résumé includes over seventy productions, ranging from classic tragedies to modern dramas, and his versatility earned him recurring collaborations with the National Theatre, the English Shakespeare Company, and numerous touring ensembles. In television and film, Woodvine became a familiar face as a reliable character actor, often cast as authoritative figures such as police inspectors. He gained early recognition as Det. Insp. Witty in Z‑Cars (1968‑69) and later reprised similar roles in Softly, Softly and New Scotland Yard. His cinematic credits span the cult classic An American Werewolf in London (1981) and Ken Russell’s controversial The Devils (1971). On the small screen he appeared in beloved series like Doctor Who (as the Marshal in “The Armageddon Factor”), The Crown (as the Archbishop of York, 2016), and the gritty drama Shameless (as Neville Gallagher). A respected voice actor, he narrated BBC radio adaptations of An Inspector Calls and The Tempent. Married to fellow actress Lynn Farleigh since 1996, he is the father of two children, including actress Mary Woodvine. Despite a brief health scare during a 2012 performance of Carousel in Leeds, Woodvine returned to work, continuing to enrich British cultural life well into his nineties.
