John Gordon Sinclair

John Gordon Sinclair (born Gordon John Sinclair on 4 February 1962 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a versatile Scottish performer whose career has spanned over four decades across film, television, stage and literature. Beginning as an apprentice electrician, he discovered his passion for acting at age fifteen when he joined Glasgow's Youth Theatre, an experience that led to a breakthrough role as Gregory in Gregory's Girl (1981), a film that became a cultural touchstone and showcased his natural charisma and comedic timing. The success of the movie launched a long‑standing collaboration with director Bill Forsyth, resulting in memorable appearances in Local Hero (1983) and Erik the Viking (1989), while his ability to shift seamlessly between light‑hearted teen dramas and darker, more nuanced projects demonstrated his range. Sinclair continued to build his résumé with supporting parts in Britannia Hospital (1982) and The Girl in the Picture (1985), and he later revisited his iconic teenage role in Gregory's Two Girls (1999). On television he became a familiar face in British households through sitcoms such as An Actor's Life For Me (1989‑93) and as a recurring presence in radio dramas, notably the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Iain Banks' Espedair Street (1998) and the series Adventures of a Black Bag (2001‑02). His voice‑over work includes the beloved children’s series Rubbadubbers and the UK version of Fraggle Rock, where his distinctive vocal talent added depth to animated characters. In the theatre, Sinclair earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1995 for his performance in She Loves Me, and he later captivated audiences in the West End’s The Producers as Leo Bloom. Beyond acting, he has authored three gritty thrillers—Seventy Times Seven (2012), Blood Whispers (2014) and Walk in Silence (2017)—showcasing his skill as a novelist. Married to Shauna McKeon since 2004, he is a proud father of two daughters and remains an active contributor to British culture, most recently appearing as Drew Cubbin in the BBC drama Traces (2019) and narrating the CBeebies series Biggleton (series 2).
