Johanna Hofer

Johanna Hofer (born Johanna Therese Stern, 30 July 1896 – 30 June 1988) was a prolific German‑born actress whose career spanned the silent era through the early 1980s, appearing in thirty‑four films and numerous stage productions. Born in Berlin to engineer Georg Stern, a future director of AEG, and Lisbeth Schmidt, she was raised in a culturally vibrant family; her maternal aunt was the renowned artist Käthe Kollwitz, and her younger sisters pursued artistic careers as dancer Katta Sterna and actress Maria Matray. Hofer’s mixed heritage—Jewish father and Lutheran mother—placed her at the crossroads of Germany’s complex social landscape, influencing both her personal life and professional choices. In 1924 she married Austrian actor Fritz Kortner, and the couple quickly became a celebrated theatrical pairing, starring together in productions such as the 1921 Othello. Facing the rise of Nazism, the pair left Germany in 1932, living in Switzerland, Austria, and the United Kingdom before immigrating to the United States in 1938; in 1941 they relocated from New York City to Los Angeles, where Hofer continued to work in film and on stage. Throughout her long career she demonstrated a remarkable adaptability, transitioning from silent film roles in the late 1920s to character parts in post‑war German cinema, culminating in her final screen appearance in 1982. Beyond her artistic achievements, Hofer was a mother of two children, balancing family life with a demanding schedule.
