Jinpachi Nezu

Jinpachi Nezu (born Tōru Nezu on 1 December 1947 in Tsuru, Yamanashi, Japan) emerged from a modest post‑war background to become one of the most versatile character actors of modern Japanese cinema. He entered the film industry in the early 1970s, debuting with Nureta sai no me (1974) and quickly establishing a reputation for embodying both gritty samurai warriors and contemporary everymen with equal conviction. Over the next decade he appeared in a string of acclaimed productions, including Akira Kurosawa’s epic Kagemusha (1980) where he portrayed the stoic Sohachiro Tsuchiya, and the internationally noted Farewell to the Land (1982), a film that was selected for the 32nd Berlin International Film Festival. His performance as the conflicted officer Jiro in Ran (1985) and the haunting voice work for the boy in Angel’s Egg (1985) further demonstrated his capacity to navigate complex emotional terrain while maintaining a striking screen presence. In addition to live‑action roles, Nezu contributed memorable voice performances to influential anime such as Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993), solidifying his status as a multi‑medium talent.

The 1990s saw Nezu taking on darker, more morally ambiguous characters, most famously Kaname Hizu in Takashi Ishii’s noir thriller Gonin (1995) and its long‑awaited sequel Gonin Saga (2015). A severe car accident in the early 2010s forced him into an involuntary retirement, during which he battled health complications that limited his public appearances. Despite these setbacks, Ishii’s personal request prompted Nezu to briefly return to the screen to reprise Hizu, marking a poignant final chapter to his cinematic journey. On 29 December 2016, after a prolonged struggle with pneumonia, Nezu passed away in Tokyo at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of over fifty film and television credits that continue to influence aspiring actors and filmmakers alike.
