Maiko, newly widowed, flies to Bali hoping the trip will ease the grief left by her husband Esau’s death. At the airport she encounters Kioko, who hands her a ceremonial dagger and a photograph of a woman named Shireni, instructing Maiko to persuade Shireni to return to Japan—or use the dagger to end her life. In Bali Maiko soon meets Shireni, who welcomes her into her secluded island home. As Maiko becomes entangled in Shireni’s alluring world, she discovers that Shireni is an immortal former spirit medium whose sole pursuit is the enjoyment of body and soul, leaving Maiko caught between bewilderment and a growing affection.
