James Saito

James Saito is an American actor whose career spans over four decades, marked by a remarkable blend of stage, television, and film work. Born on March 6, 1955 in Los Angeles, California, he grew up in a Japanese‑American household that deeply valued cultural heritage, a background that would later inform many of his character choices. After graduating from Hamilton High School, Saito pursued a theater degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he honed his craft before moving to New York to study with legendary acting teacher Uta Hagen at HB Studio. He was also among the final students to work directly with Sanford Meisner, first on the Caribbean island of Bequia and later in North Hollywood, experiences that gave him a reputation for disciplined, instinctive performance. Saito’s stage work earned him an OBIE Award for his role in Durango at the Public Theater, cementing his status as a respected figure in the New York theatre community. Transitioning to screen, he became widely recognized as the original Shredder in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, a role that introduced him to a generation of fans. Subsequent television highlights include Dr. Chen on Eli Stone, Kenji on Modern Love, and memorable guest spots on such series as Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order, and The Deuce. His film résumé is equally diverse, featuring supporting roles in Life of Pi, Big Eyes, Pearl Harbor, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and the Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe (as Harry Kim). In recent years he appeared as Bob Lin in the 2021 Netflix film Love Hard, proving his continued relevance in contemporary cinema. A member of both the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Saito remains an influential and versatile talent whose work bridges cultural representation and mainstream entertainment.
