What's After the Movie

Harry Secombe

Harry Secombe was a Welsh actor, comedian, singer and television presenter whose career spanned over five decades, making him one of Britain’s most beloved entertainers. Born on 8 September 1921 in St Thomas, Swansea, he grew up in a devout Anglican family and sang in the local church choir, developing a talent that later earned him the nickname “the bel belto” for his powerful tenor voice. After leaving school he joined the Territorial Army and served in the Royal Artillery during World II, where he first met future Goon Show partner Spike Milligan and began performing comedy sketches for troops in North Africa and Italy. Following demobilisation he appeared in the Windmill Theatre in 1946, and his breakthrough came in 1951 when he became a resident comedian on the BBC radio series Welsh Rarebit and shortly thereafter helped launch The Goon Show. As Neddie Seagoon he anchored the absurdist programme, and his vocal prowess secured a parallel recording career that produced hits such as “If I Ruled the World” and “This Is My Song”. In film he is remembered for his charismatic turn as Mr Bumble in Oliver! (1968) and his Broadway‑toured performance in Pickwick, which earned him a Tony nomination. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Secombe hosted his own television series, most notably The Harry Secombe Show, and later became a familiar face on religious programmes like Songs of Praise. Knighted in 1981 and appointed CBE in 1963, he continued to work until illness forced his retirement; he died of prostate cancer on 11 April 2001, leaving a legacy of laughter, music, and charitable goodwill.
