What's After the Movie
Glenn Franklin Howerton III is an American actor, writer, and producer best known for his iconic portrayal of the narcissistic Dennis Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a role he has inhabited since the series debuted in 2005. Born on April 13, 1976, in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, Howerton grew up in a military family, moving frequently across the United States, England, and South Korea before finally settling in Montgomery, Alabama, where he graduated from Jefferson Davis High School. He pursued formal training at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and later earned a BFA from the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, graduating in 2000 as part of Group 29. After early television work—including a starring role in That ’80s Show (2002) and guest appearances on ER (2003)—Howerton landed small film parts in Must Love Dogs (2005) and Crank (2006). However, his career breakthrough arrived with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a show he co‑created with Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, and where he also serves as executive producer, writer, and occasional director. In addition to Sunny, Howerton has built a versatile résumé: he played the recurring lawyer Cliff Gilbert on The Mindy Project (2012‑2017), the eccentric Don Chumph on the first season of Fargo (2014), and the disgruntled professor Jack Griffin on A.P. Bio (2018‑2021). His film work includes leading roles such as Will in the comedy Coffee Town (2013) and a praised turn as Jim Balsillie in the BlackBerry biopic (2023). Outside acting, Howerton co‑hosted The Always Sunny Podcast (2021‑2023) and launched the charitable Four Walls Whiskey in 2022. He married actress Jill Latiano in 2009, and the couple has two sons (born 2011 and 2014). Diagnosed with ADHD in 2023, Howerton follows a mostly vegan diet and continues to expand his creative pursuits across television, film, and podcasting.
