Dominique Sanda, born Dominique Marie‑Françoise Renée Varaigne on 11 March 1951 in Paris, France, emerged as one of the most iconic figures of European cinema in the 1970s, celebrated for her ethereal beauty and intense screen presence. The daughter of Lucienne (née Pichon) and Gérard Varaigne, she entered the film world with a modest debut in Une femme douce (1969) before quickly attracting the attention of celebrated directors such as Vittorio De Sica, Bernardo Bertolucci and Liliana Cavani. Her breakthrough came with De Sica’s Il Giardino dei Finzi‑Contini (1970), a poignant adaptation that showcased her ability to convey melancholy with a single glance, and was followed by a series of landmark roles including Bertolucci’s stylistic masterpiece The Conformist (1970) and his epic Novecento (1976). In addition to her Italian collaborations, Sanda proved versatile in English‑language productions, sharing the screen with Paul Newman in The Mackintosh Man (1973) and with Max von Sydow in Steppenwolf (1974), thereby cementing her status as an international star.
