Dennis B. Ross is an American diplomat, author, and senior policy adviser whose career has spanned more than five decades of U.S. foreign‑policy making. Born on 1948‑11‑26 in San Francisco, California, he grew up in the affluent community of Belvedere before attending the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Ph.D. with a dissertation on Soviet decision‑making. After completing his studies, Ross entered government service during the Carter administration, working under Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and co‑authoring a study that advocated greater U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf to protect vital oil supplies.
