Dayahang Rai

Dayahang Rai (born 13 April 1980) is a celebrated Nepalese actor, director, and playwright who has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary Nepali cinema. Born in the remote village of Khawa in Bhojpur District, he grew up in a Bantawa Rai family, the middle child among three siblings, and was enchanted early on by the fairy tales his mother narrated, which sparked his imagination and love for storytelling. After completing his secondary education in local schools, he pursued Journalism at Ratna Rajya Campus in Kathmandu, yet his passion for performance soon led him to the stage. In 2007 he joined the Actors’ Studio and co‑founded Mandala Theatre, where he honed his craft in experimental plays such as Talakjung vs Tulke. His theatrical roots are evident in the depth and nuance he brings to every character, blending naturalist realism with a keen sense of social commentary.

Dayahang’s cinematic breakthrough arrived with the 2006 debut Anagarik, but it was the 2012 blockbuster Loot that cemented his status as a star, earning him critical acclaim for his portrayal of the witty yet vulnerable Gofle. He subsequently headlined a string of hit films—including Kabaddi, Chhadke, Badhshala, and White Sun—many of which explored Nepal’s turbulent recent history. A three‑time National Award winner, he has been honoured for best supporting actor (Dasdhunga, 2009) and best actor (Sambodhan, 2015; Kabaddi Kabaddi, 2016). Beyond the screen, Dayahang is married to singer Benuka Rai since 2006, and the couple shares two sons, Samduhang and Sinchunghang. His enduring popularity, versatile talent, and commitment to socially relevant storytelling continue to shape the evolving landscape of Nepali film and theatre.
