What's After the Movie
Sir David Attenborough is a British broadcaster, biologist, natural historian and writer whose career spans more than seven decades. Born on 8 May 1926 in Isleworth, Middlesex, he grew up in a university environment where his father was principal of the University of Leicester, fostering an early fascination with fossils, stones and living creatures. After studying natural sciences at Clare College, Cambridge, and completing national service, he joined the BBC in 1952, initially as a producer for the Talks department before appearing on‑screen as the presenter of Zoo Quest in 1954. His innovative approach to wildlife filmmaking, combining rigorous scientific research with compelling storytelling, led to the landmark series Life on Earth (1979) and subsequently a string of acclaimed documentaries such as The Living Planet, The Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Dynasties, many of which introduced groundbreaking camera techniques and earned him unprecedented BAFTA awards across black‑and‑white, colour, HD, 3D and 4K formats. As Controller of BBC Two (1965‑1969) he reshaped the channel’s schedule, championing diverse programming that included arts, comedy and natural history, and later returned to full‑time filmmaking, authoring over fifty series that have been broadcast worldwide. Throughout his work he has become a vocal advocate for environmental protection, addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable consumption in programs like State of the Planet and A Life on Our Planet. His numerous honours include a knighthood (1985), the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday Prize (2003), and more than thirty honorary doctorates, cementing his status as a cultural treasure and a global voice for the natural world. Attenborough’s calm, semi‑whisper narration style and his relentless curiosity continue to inspire generations of viewers and scientists alike.
