Clelia Matania

Clelia Matania was a versatile Italian performer whose career spanned both the golden age of Italian cinema and the vibrant post‑war theater scene, earning her a reputation as one of the most beloved character actresses of her generation. Born on 28 March 1918 in London, she was the daughter of the renowned Capri‑born painter Fortunino Matania, a naturalised Briton who was affectionately known as Saturnino, and from an early age she was immersed in an artistic milieu that shaped her future path; she studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, complemented by training in ballet, singing and music, which gave her a solid foundation for a multifaceted career. After the family’s return to Italy, Matania joined Anton Giulio Bragaglia’s Arts Theater company, quickly becoming one of the most requested young actresses of the Italian prose scene in the late 1930s and throughout the war, and by the early 1940s she was also starring in successful revues, showcasing her comedic timing alongside legends such as Totò and Eduardo De Filippo. Her fluency in English opened doors to international productions filmed in Italy, leading to memorable supporting roles in films like Quo Vadis (1951) and The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969), while her distinctive voice made her a prolific dubbing artist who contributed to the Italian versions of numerous foreign movies. In addition to her screen work, she brought Italian theatrical flair to English audiences, touring the musical comedy Enrico ’61 in Liverpool and London and even performing at a Royal Presentation before the British Royal Family, underscoring her cross‑cultural appeal. Married to painter Guido Odierna, Matania balanced a vibrant professional life with her personal one, and although she left no documented children, her legacy endures through the countless performances that captured her charismatic presence and the admiration she continues to receive from cinema historians and theatre enthusiasts alike.
