Claire Maurier

Claire Maurier (born Odette‑Michelle‑Suzanne Agramon on 27 March 1929) is a celebrated French actress whose career spanned more than six decades, encompassing over ninety film appearances and numerous stage productions. Born in the picturesque town of Céret in the Pyrénées‑Orientales, she entered the world of cinema at the tail end of the 1940s, initially taking small, often uncredited roles that allowed her to hone her craft. Her breakthrough arrived with François Truffaut’s seminal 1959 masterpiece The 400 Blows, where she portrayed Gilberte Doinel, the poignant mother of the young protagonist. This performance secured her place among the New Wave’s most reliable character actors, leading to memorable parts such as the duplicitous Christiane Colombey in La Cuisine au beurre (1963) and the endearing Simone in Édouard Molinaro’s La Cage aux Folles (1978). In 1981 she earned a César nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her nuanced turn as Madeleine in A Bad Son, highlighting her ability to convey complex emotional landscapes. Decades later, Maurier achieved international recognition as Mme Suzanne, the kindly owner of the iconic Café des 2 Moulins in Jean‑Pierre Jeunet’s globally adored Amélie (2001). The film’s record‑breaking success in the United States and its numerous award nominations introduced her to new generations of viewers, cementing her status as a beloved elder figure in French cinema. She continued to work prolifically, appearing in the television comedy series Faites comme chez vous! (2005) as Maryse Berthelot and delivering a compelling performance as the neglectful mother in Jean Becker’s My Afternoons with Margueritte (2010).
