Carolyn Craig

Adele Ruth Crago, known professionally as Carolyn Craig, was an American actress whose brief but memorable career spanned the mid‑1950s to the late‑1960s. Born on October 27, 1934 in Valley Stream, New York, she moved to California where she honed her craft at the Community Playhouse in Santa Barbara before breaking into Hollywood. Craig’s film debut came in 1956 with a small part as Lacey Lynnton in the epic Giant, and she quickly moved to more substantial roles, most notably as Ruth Madison in the 1957 noir Portland Exposé and as the young love interest in the 1958 Western Apache Territory. Her most enduring performance arrived in 1959 when she portrayed Nora Manning in William Castle’s classic horror film House on Haunted Hill, a role that cemented her place in genre‑film history. Beyond the big screen, Craig became a familiar face on television, appearing in episodes of such series as Perry Mason (“The Case of the Drowning Duck”), The Rifleman (“End of a Young Gun”), and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp where she played Edna Granger. She also held a recurring role on the soap opera General Hospital, showcasing her versatility across drama and adventure genres. Craig’s personal life was marked by two marriages. In 1957 she married fellow actor Charles E. Graham, with whom she had a son, Charles Edward Graham II, in 1959; the couple divorced in 1961. She subsequently wed Arthur Francis Bryden later that year, a marriage that lasted until her untimely death. On December 12, 1970, Craig died in Culver City, California from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 36; her passing received little media coverage, and she was interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Despite a career cut short, her work on both film and television continues to be appreciated by classic‑movie enthusiasts.
