What's After the Movie

Brian Worth

Brian Worth was an English actor whose career spanned several decades and included notable contributions to British cinema and television. Born on July 30, 1914, in London, England, Worth pursued education in both Britain and America, initially learning the technical aspects of commercial advertising films before discovering his passion for acting. His early career was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served with distinction from 1941 to 1946 as an officer in the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Based out of Algeria and later Seville at the British embassy, Worth undertook dangerous missions escorting Allied agents over the Pyrenees into occupied France and exfiltrating both agents and escaped airmen back to neutral Spain, demonstrating courage that would later inform the intensity of his performances. Following the war, he briefly returned to the stage between 1946 and 1947 before transitioning fully to screen acting.

During the first half of the 1950s, Worth established himself as a reliable supporting actor, appearing in over a dozen films including the classic Tom Brown's Schooldays (1951), where he portrayed the progressive teacher Mr. Judd, as well as notable productions such as Scrooge (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), and An Inspector Calls (1954). He expanded his repertoire to television, taking on the title role in Francis Storm Investigates and appearing in the acclaimed science fiction miniseries Quatermass and the Pit. From 1956 onward, his roles gradually became smaller, though he continued to work with esteemed directors, appearing in four films for Michael Powell and securing a small role in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). His television work included memorable appearances in The Saint (1965) and The Prisoner (1967-68). In his later years, Worth and his Spanish wife, Tere, operated a popular Spanish restaurant in the basement of Draycott Avenue in Chelsea during the 1960s and 1970s. He died in Seville, Spain, on August 25, 1978, at the age of 64, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances across multiple mediums.
