What's After the Movie
Birgitte Federspiel (born Karen Birgitte Federspiel on 6 September 1925 in Copenhagen) was a seminal Danish actress whose career spanned six decades across film, theatre and television. The daughter of respected actor Ejner Federspiel and Gunver Fönss, she entered the cinematic world as a teenager, appearing in the 1940 adventure Jens Langkniv and quickly establishing herself as a versatile talent. Throughout the 1950s she achieved critical acclaim, most notably receiving the prestigious Bodil Award for Best Actress in 1955 for her haunting performance as Inger Borgen in Carl Theodor Dreyer’s masterpiece Ordet, and again in 1959 for En fremmed banker på. Her nuanced portrayals often blended emotional depth with a subtle, understated intensity that became her trademark. In addition to her film successes, Federspiel became a familiar face on Danish television, embodying the aristocratic Baroness von Rydtger in three memorable episodes of the beloved series Matador. The international audience later discovered her talent in the Oscar‑winning 1987 film Babette's Feast, where she delivered a poignant turn as Martine, the village's supportive matriarch. Her extensive filmography includes over forty titles, ranging from comedies such as Kispus (1956) to dramatic works like Sult (1966) and the cult classic Z.P.G. (1972). Beyond the screen, she remained active on stage, contributing to Denmark’s theatrical tradition well into the 1990s. Federspiel’s personal life was intertwined with the performing arts; she married fellow actors Freddy Koch and later Jens Østerholm, though she kept her private life discreet. She passed away in Odense on 2 February 2005 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to inspire Danish cinema and theatre.
