Betsy Gay

Elizabeth Ann Gunst, better known by her stage name Betsy Gay, was an American child star whose career spanned the golden era of Hollywood and the early days of country music. Born on February 2, 1929, in Waterford, Connecticut, she grew up in a musical household; her parents, Charles and Helen Gay, operated a music store and taught a bewildering array of instruments, from piano and banjo to steel guitar and accordion, giving young Betsy a solid foundation in performance. By the age of six, she had already begun appearing in motion pictures, debuting in the Our Gang short film series produced by Hal Roach, where her natural charm and lively presence quickly earned her the nickname “Little Rascal.” Over the next decade she accumulated credits in roughly forty feature films, including notable bit‑parts in Our Gang Follies of 1938, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), and the adventure serial Mystery Plane (1939), with her final screen appearance recorded in 1943.

After her film career waned, Gay shifted her focus to music, emerging as a talented country singer and yodeler. She collaborated with icons such as Dale Evans, Stuart Hamblen, and Tex Williams, and her yodeling prowess won her back‑to‑back victories in a California competition during the mid‑1940s. Recordings for Capitol Records and Decca Records captured her versatile voice, and she became a respected figure in the post‑war country scene. In 1954 she married Thomas Cashen, a union that lasted until his death in 2005, and the couple raised five children together. Gay’s later years were marked by quiet retirement away from the spotlight, but her legacy endures through her extensive filmography and discography. She passed away on June 13, 2025, at the age of 96, leaving behind a rich tapestry of early Hollywood charm and mid‑century country music heritage.
