Anton Walbrook

Anton Walbrook (born Adolf Anton Wilhelm Wohlbrück, 19 November 1896 – 9 August 1967) was a renowned Austrian‑born actor who built a trans‑national career that spanned silent German cinema, pre‑war Austrian stage, and classic British film. Born in Vienna to Gisela Rosa (Cohn) and circus‑clown Adolf Ferdinand Bernhard Hermann Wohlbrück, he was the ninth generation of a family of performers, although his father deliberately broke the theatrical tradition. He attended a monastery school and even considered the priesthood before choosing the footlights, studying under Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. His early promise was interrupted by World War I, during which he was captured in France and held in a POW camp, an experience that deepened his resolve to pursue acting after the conflict ended.

Returning to a vibrant German‑language stage, Wohlbrück quickly became one of the most popular actors in 1930s Germany, praised for his suave demeanor and elegant diction. The rise of the Nazi regime, however, forced a dramatic shift: his mother’s Jewish heritage and his own homosexuality made continued residence in Germany perilous. He emigrated to Hollywood in 1936, reshooting dialogue for The Soldier and the Lady and adopting the stage name Anton Walbrook to avoid anti‑German sentiment. A brief bout of suspicion by Jewish‑American groups labeled him a possible Nazi spy, but RKO successfully defended his true background. Settling in London in 1937, Walbrook obtained British citizenship in 1947 and flourished in the Powell‑Pressburger partnership, delivering memorable performances in 49th Parallel (1941), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), and the iconic The Red Shoes (1948). His portrayal of aristocratic and continental characters—often tinged with melancholy and restrained passion—earned him a reputation as a passionate spokesman for pan‑European liberalism. After retiring from feature films in 1958, he returned to Germany, working on stage and television until a heart attack on stage in 1967 led to his death at the home of actress Hansi Burg in Bavaria. His ashes rest in St. John’s Churchyard, Hampstead, alongside his long‑time partner Eugene Edwards.
