Antoine Bourseiller

Antoine Bourseiller (8 July 1930 – 21 May 2013) was a seminal figure in French theatrical and operatic life, renowned for his work as a comedian, director, and occasional actor. Born in Paris, he entered the cultural scene in the early 1960s, first gaining prominence when he headed the Studio des Champs‑Elysées from 1960 to 1963, a period during which he won the Prix du Concours des Jeunes compagnies (1960) and the Grand Prix du théâtre du Syndicat de la critique (1963). His leadership at the studio showcased his talent for nurturing emerging talent, and his bold programming earned him a reputation as an innovative force in French theatre. In 1966 he was appointed director of the Centre dramatique national d'Aix‑en‑Provence, where he continued to experiment with contemporary staging and collaborations, and later took the helm of the historic Théâtre Récamier, further cementing his status as a versatile director. From 1982 until 1996 he oversaw the Opéra de Nancy et de Lorraine, expanding the company's repertoire and introducing modern interpretations of classic works, a tenure marked by both critical acclaim and increased audience engagement. As an actor, Bourseiller appeared in notable films such as Cléo de 5 à 7 (1961) and Clara et les Chics Types (1981), displaying a subtle, character‑driven style that complemented his behind‑the‑scenes expertise. His directorial film work includes Marie Soleil (1966) and the interview documentary Jean Genet: Entretien avec Antoine Bourseiller (1981), which reflected his deep interest in literary and avant‑garde subjects. On a personal level, Bourseiller’s relationships linked him to prominent cultural figures: he fathered a daughter, Rosalie Varda, with pioneering filmmaker Agnès Varda, and later married actress Chantal Darget, with whom he had another daughter, the bull‑fighter‑turned‑celebrity Marie Sara, and gained a stepson, Christophe Bourseiller.
