What's After the Movie

Anna Lee Carroll

Anna Lee Carroll, often affectionately called "Boots", was an American actress whose career spanned more than six decades, primarily rooted in her native Alabama. Born on October 7, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the only child of Frederick L. "Peck" and Ella Corrine "E.C." Carroll, a detail that underscored her close‑knit family background. She launched her professional stage work in 1952 with James Hatcher’s Town and Gown Theater, quickly rising to become one of the most prominent stage actresses in the state, a reputation she maintained through dozens of productions at venues such as the Virginia Samford Theatre, Birmingham Festival Theatre, and the Terrific New Theatre. Her theatrical collaborations often featured longtime friend and writer Fannie Flagg, whom she met in 1960, and together they helped define the vibrant regional theater scene of the 1960s and beyond. While her heart lay onstage, Carroll also appeared in several notable films, most famously portraying Nurse Bradford in the 1968 adaptation of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, where she delivered the dialogue for Alan Arkin’s deaf‑mute character, a role that highlighted her nuanced performance abilities. Earlier film credits include Not of This Earth (1957) and the sci‑fi thriller Marlowe (1969), and she briefly appeared in the 1961 movie Fear No More. Television appearances, such as a 1959 episode of One Step Beyond, further showcased her versatility across media. Even after a serious fall in 2012 that revealed an unrelated tumor, Carroll demonstrated remarkable resilience, returning to the stage and completing her final performance in 2015. Her dedication endured until health challenges in 2016, and she passed away on April 30, 2017, at the age of 86, leaving a lasting legacy in both film and the rich tapestry of Alabama’s theatrical heritage.
