André Maranne

André Maranne (born André Gaston Maillol) was a French‑born British actor whose career spanned more than three decades, beginning in the mid‑1950s and concluding in the early 1990s. Born on 14 May 1926 in Toulouse, France, he moved to the United Kingdom where he became a familiar face in both film and television, often portraying French characters with a charming blend of authenticity and comic timing. His breakthrough came with the role of Sgt. François Chevalier, a recurring French police sergeant who appeared alongside Peter Sellers in six Pink Panther movies, cementing his place in popular cinema and endearing him to international audiences. Before the Pink Panther series, Maranne earned small but memorable parts such as a French officer in The War Lover (1962) and an uncredited SPECTRE operative in the James Bond film Thunderball (1965). He also made frequent appearances on British television, turning up in classics like Fawlty Towers (the “Gourmet Night” episode), Doctor Who (“The Moonbase”, 1967), Yes Minister (as Commissioner Maurice in “Party Games”, 1984), and the detective drama Lord Peter Wimsey (“Clouds of Witness”, 1972). In addition to acting, Maranne contributed to language education as one of the co‑presenters of the BBC’s French teaching programmes Bonjour Françoise and Ensemble – French for Beginners, showcasing his fluency and pedagogical skill. His later work included voice‑over translation for the 1988 ITV documentary The Men Who Killed Kennedy. Maranne remained active on screen until 1991, after which he retired from public life. He passed away on 12 April 2021 in Brighton, England, survived by his long‑time wife Moira Mitchell. His legacy endures through a diverse body of work that highlights the nuanced portrayal of French characters in British media.
