Al Shean

Al Shean (born Abraham Elieser Adolph Schönberg on May 12, 1868 in Dornum, then part of the Kingdom of Prussia) was a German‑born American comedian and vaudeville star whose career spanned more than three decades. He grew up in a family of entertainers; his father, Levi (sometimes recorded as Louis) Schoenberg, worked as a magician, and his sister Minnie later married Sam “Frenchie” Marx, making Al the uncle of the legendary Marx Brothers. After honing his craft in European music halls, Shean emigrated to the United States where he quickly made a name for himself on the American vaudeville circuit, eventually forming the famous partnership with Edward Gallagher that produced the hit act Gallagher and Shean. Although the duo's on‑stage chemistry delighted audiences, contemporary accounts suggest that Gallagher and Shean did not get along personally, and their partnership dissolved after a final appearance in the Ziegfeld Follies. Shean continued to work as a solo performer, appearing in eight Broadway productions—including the title role in Father Malachy’s Miracle—and transitioning to film in the mid‑1930s. His screen credits include the piano‑playing “Professor” in San Francisco (1936), a kindly grandfather in The Blue Bird (1940), a priest in Hitler’s Madman (1943), and numerous smaller parts in roughly three dozen movies. In addition to his own performances, Al Shean is credited with helping his nephews draft their first successful vaudeville sketch, reportedly penned on butcher paper in his sister’s kitchen. He married Johanna Davidson, and the couple had one child, also named Al Shean, who later worked on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Al Shean died in New York City on August 12, 1949 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that bridges the golden age of vaudeville and the early days of American sound cinema.
