Addie McPhail

Addie McPhail (born Addie Dukes on July 15, 1905) was an American film actress whose life spanned nearly a century of cinematic change. Born in the small community of White Plains, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Van and Cordelia Dukes, a family that moved frequently because her father worked in insurance. The Dukes settled for a time in Madisonville and Providence, where young Addie attended school and first discovered a talent for performance, winning several local stage contests that hinted at a future in entertainment. In 1911 the family relocated to Chicago, a city that offered broader opportunities for a budding performer, and it was there that Addie's confidence grew as she appeared in amateur productions. By 1925 the family made the pivotal move to Hollywood, a transition that Addie later described as “fate,” because it placed her at the heart of the emerging film industry just as the silent era was giving way to sound. Addie quickly secured work with Stern Brothers, a studio specializing in short comedies distributed by Universal, and launched a prolific screen career that would span more than a decade. Over the course of her career, McPhail appeared in more than 60 films between 1927 and 1941, appearing in titles such as Double Whoopee (1929), The Three Sisters (1930), and the uncredited role of Jane Browne in Northwest Passage (1940). Although she was praised for her comedic timing, the physical demands of slap‑stick comedy eventually eroded her enthusiasm, leading her to confess later, “Maybe I was never the actress I wanted to be.” Her personal life intertwined with Hollywood royalty when she married pianist and songwriter Lindsay McPhail, with whom she had a daughter, and later became the third and final wife of silent‑film legend Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle in 1932. After retiring from acting, Addie devoted 17 years as a volunteer nurse at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, caring for fellow industry veterans until her death in Canoga Park, California, on April 14, 2003.
