Negative Pickup

A financing deal where a distributor agrees to buy a completed film negative at a set price

Definition and Mechanism

In a negative pickup agreement, an independent producer secures a contract from a distributor or studio to purchase the film’s completed negative for a guaranteed price. The producer uses this commitment as collateral to raise production financing, often through loans or equity.

Practical Workflow

Producers assemble soft money—tax credits, pre-sales and private equity—then secure the negative pickup contract. Lenders underwrite the financing based on that guaranteed purchase, confident repayment will come when the distributor takes delivery of the final negative.

Risks and Benefits

Negative pickups transfer market risk to distributors, who assume responsibility for marketing and distribution. Producers gain financing certainty but lose control over release strategy. If production overruns lead to budget excesses, producers must cover the difference out of pocket.

Industry Examples

Independent features at major festivals often secure negative pickups before shooting. While successful pickups can launch careers, overreliance on this model may constrain creative flexibility and introduce stringent delivery deadlines.
