What Is Yakuza: Like a Dragon About?

The premise of Yakuza: Like a Dragon in 304 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the neon-lit streets of Kamurocho, where loyalties run as deep as the debts that bind them, Kazuma Kiryū steps back into a world he tried to leave behind. Fresh out of a long stretch in prison, the former yakuza foot soldier carries himself with a quiet determination to rebuild his life on his own terms. The glitz and grit of the district feel both familiar and foreign to him, a place he once called home but now must navigate as an outsider seeking redemption.

Yet the past has a way of finding those who try to outrun it. Lurking in the shadows is Gorō Majima, a volatile figure from Kiryū’s old life whose reputation precedes him — a man with a baseball bat and a score to settle. Their history is tangled in the kind of brotherhood that turns bitter when pride is involved, and Majima’s hunt for Kiryū signals that the underworld has not forgotten either of them. The tension between them crackles with the kind of intensity that promises a reckoning neither can avoid.

What follows is a clash between Kiryū’s yearning for peace and the gravitational pull of the streets that raised him. Every corner of Kamurocho hums with unspoken threats, every familiar face could be a friend or a foe, and the line between honor and survival blurs with each passing moment. Kiryū’s journey becomes a study in identity — whether a man can truly escape the shadows of his former self, or whether those shadows will always find a way back.

Beneath the pulsing nightlife and the weight of oaths long sworn, a story of brotherhood, betrayal, and the cost of freedom unfolds. Kiryū must reckon not only with Majima’s vendetta, but with the question of who he truly wants to be when the violence finally catches up.

Spoilers ahead

On a scorching summer night in Kamurocho, a chaotic scene unfolds as a duo of amateur masked gunmen launches an assault on a bank. This brazen attack results in the disappearance of a staggering 10 billion yen belonging to the intimidating Tojo Clan, a powerful yakuza organization. Amidst this turmoil, former yakuza Kazuma Kiryu, played by Kazuki Kitamura, and his adopted daughter, Haruka Sawamura, portrayed by Saki Takaoka, embark on a journey to find Mizuki Sawamura, Haruka’s mother and Kiryu’s long-lost love’s sister. Their quest is further complicated by the relentless pursuit of Kiryu’s old rival, the deranged yakuza Goro Majima, brought to life by Goro Kishitani, along with his henchmen.

Trouble ensues when Kiryu is ambushed by members of the Nishikiyama family at a convenience store named Sancho. In the midst of this encounter, a Poppo employee, Satoru, takes the opportunity to make a quick escape with his new girlfriend Yui, played by Saeko, as they raid the cash register, kicking off a series of audacious hold-ups for both thrill and profit.

In another corner of Kamurocho, a mysterious Korean hitman known as Park, portrayed by Gong Yoo, tracks down the mastermind behind the Tojo Clan’s heist. His investigation leads him to the notorious Jingu, also referred to as Mister N, and ultimately to the iconic Millennium Tower, a pivotal location in the unfolding drama.

The search for Mizuki sees Kiryu face off against yakuza Akira Nishikiyama, played by Claude Maki, atop the Millennium Tower. Their confrontation escalates into an intense showdown as Nishikiyama seeks to prove himself as the superior man to Kiryu. As tensions reach a boiling point, Mizuki makes a desperate decision—she detonates the Millennium Tower in an effort to eliminate Jingu, resulting in the widespread scattering of the Tojo Clan’s financial reserves across Kabukicho. In this harrowing moment, she urges Kiryu to escape with Haruka.

In the aftermath of this climactic battle, all storylines converge dramatically. Mizuki’s sacrifice looms large, while Majima manages to slip away, evading capture for the moment. Meanwhile, Satoru carries a gravely injured Yui through the desperate streets following a confrontation with another clan. Park bids farewell to his backers after successfully taking out Mister N and prepares to return to Korea. The masked gunmen are finally apprehended, but amidst the devastation left by the explosive events, Haruka clings to Kiryu’s hand, heartbroken and feeling entirely alone. She looks up at him and expresses a heartfelt desire to be adopted, forging a new family bond as they stand amid the remnants of the fallen tower.
