In a quiet forest, a peaceful community of birds centers around a pair of sparrows tending seven eggs in a shared nest. A fierce storm arrives, and a cruel predator, Fagin, a vulture-like bird of prey, sweeps through the trees, leaving devastation in his wake. The assault tears the nest apart and sends the eggs tumbling to the ground, where only one survives, landing near a hollow in a tree that belongs to Walter, an owl who watches over the forest. A bluebird named Betty steps in to adopt the lone egg, giving it a chance at life.

Time passes, and the egg hatches into a lively chick named Oliver. While Betty tends to him, Walter shares a tale of how Betty once saved a dove from a cat, a story that ripples through the family as Oliver grows. Betty later travels to a nearby city and meets Olivia, an orphaned sparrow whose parents fell victim to Fagin. Moved by Olivia’s plight, Betty brings her into the fold and introduces her to Oliver; the two youngsters quickly become friends and allies.

As Betty is away again, Oliver and Olivia wander the woods and befriend two orphaned mice. They play and learn together, and when Ingolf, one of the mice, dreams of flight and slips into a stream, the group rushes to rescue him. A dove returns to warn them about Fagin, forcing the group to hide. Their safety is short-lived, however, as a human ornithologist and his dog drive off the danger, giving them a momentary reprieve. Betty later returns to chide the youngsters for straying too far from home.

Oliver, inspired by Olivia’s bravery and companionship, begins to learn what it means to fly. Eventually, he masters the skill with Olivia’s steadfast support. Back in their forest home, Olivia’s feelings for Oliver deepen, and she begins to develop a crush on him. The pair then venture into town and share meals at a small market, where they encounter the same cat that once haunted their earlier days. Olivia, drawing on the cleverness she’s learned from Betty, outwits the cat, sending it crashing into a box and attracting the attention—and later the scorn—of the fruit stand owner. The birds retreat to the forest, where the dove reminds Oliver of his past and the danger that still looms from Fagin.

Oliver discovers a painful truth: his real parents were killed by Fagin. Fueled by a desire to protect his new family and friends, he resolves to confront the danger, but his first attempt to rally the other birds fails as fear overwhelms them. He renews his hope after reconnecting with Armstrong, a charismatic seagull who invites him to a party that night. Returning to the nest, Olivia playfully nudges Oliver toward love, and the two characters openly acknowledge their feelings as they plot a plan to outwit Fagin.

That night, Oliver joins Armstrong’s party, where a rousing song about courage resonates and helps him win the trust of the other birds. The gathering strengthens his resolve, and he begins to put the plan into motion with the help of his friends, including Frederick and Ingolf, while Walter watches from nearby. The dove’s warnings keep them cautious as they methodically set a trap for Fagin.

The next day, Frederick and Ingolf join the effort, and the group—including Armstrong—prepares the trap. Fagin, hearing rumors of Oliver’s scheme, arrives with a fierce hunger for revenge. In a brutal confrontation, he attacks Olivia, Frederick, and Ingolf, forcing Oliver to intervene. He is knocked unconscious when Fagin strikes him, and the dove promptly alerts Betty to the danger. Betty arrives, unleashing a fierce counterattack that leaves Fagin half-blind after a slash across one eye, and the chase drives him toward the stormy skies. In the chaos, the danger is personal and heartbreaking: Betty is killed while defending Oliver.

Oliver’s friends carry him into a hollow log as Olivia mourns, and Betty’s sacrifice becomes a turning point for the fledgling group. After the storm clears, they return to find the nest destroyed and Walter gone, leaving Oliver and Olivia once again as orphans, their spirits tested but not broken. A brief moment of doubt gives way to renewed purpose as they reconcile their fears with their love, and they decide to carry on.

As Oliver and Olivia lean into their bond, they join forces with Frederick and Ingolf once more. They devise a final plan to trap Fagin, with Walter watching from the wings and the dove signaling warnings. They confront Fagin, who now bears the mark of Betty’s defense—one eye scarred from their earlier clash. In a climactic battle, Fagin snatches Olivia, but Oliver’s courage drives him to rescue her. The dove seizes Fagin and drags him toward the fire, while Frederick and Olivia rush into the flames to rescue Oliver, with Ingolf watching in awe.

The confrontation ends as Fagin, his wing aflame, and the dove trapped by the blaze plunge into the fire and perish. The birds mourn their losses but eventually proclaim victory. Walter reunites with Armstrong, and together they celebrate the hard-won peace that returns to the forest.

In the wake of conflict, harmony finally returns to the forest. Oliver and Olivia become mates, and the couple starts a family of their own, with two children who resemble them. Frederick and Ingolf grow more independent, while Walter continues to spin tales for Oliver and Olivia’s children. Ingolf, after a long, patient effort, makes a successful attempt at flying, reminding everyone that resilience and friendship can help even the smallest birds rise above danger.
