Fifteen-year-old Sam Franks returns to his Victoria hometown from a Melbourne boarding school, carrying with him a quiet ache and a tender, unspoken affection for a local girl named Silvy. Silvy uses a leg brace to aid her mobility, a disability that never dims her warmth or the connection she shares with Sam. They become inseparable friends, each finding in the other a world where poetry, patience, and small acts of kindness can feel like a kind of magic. Sam’s mother is gone, and his father, a stern presence, gives him little comfort or reassurance; in Silvy, Sam finds a sanctuary where beauty and harmony through words and shared moments seem possible.

One night, a spontaneous ride ends at a river, where Sam dives into the water and gently removes Silvy’s leg braces. In the moonlit current, the two friends “dance” together, the water gleaming around them as a kiss seals a fleeting, perfect moment. They gaze at the stars, and for a breathless instant everything feels right. Sam closes his eyes to make a wish, then opens them to a terrifying sight: Silvy has vanished. A frantic search follows as he struggles against the river’s pull, and when he finally returns to Silvy’s home, the truth he fears looms large—her body is not found until much later, resting in an underwater cave.

Two decades slip by. Now thirty-five, Sam teaches psychology at a Melbourne institute, and life’s routine is interrupted when he must return to his hometown to bury a father who has long haunted him with absence and severity. On the train, a chance encounter introduces him to a polite, kind woman named Ruby. He steps away to tend to his father’s casket, and when he returns, Ruby has vanished as if she were never there. That night, a torrential downpour floods the city, and Sam witnesses a woman falling from a bridge into the river below. He rescues her, only to discover that she is Ruby, a woman who cannot remember her own name and who seems to carry in her voice and mannerisms a haunting echo of Silvy.

Sam’s curiosity deepens into a cautious belief that Silvy has somehow returned, perhaps not as Silvy herself but through this amnesiac woman who bears her essence. He hypnotizes Ruby, and under trance she speaks of being pulled down, sinking into cold depths, followed by a moment of panic that softens into warmth and comfort—the sensation Sam once shared with Silvy. He clings to the possibility that Silvy has come back in a new form, and that this new person could be the key to unlocking what happened that night by the river.

The next day, Ruby asks to be taken to her “real home.” Sam carries her, noting how her legs fail her again, and he senses that their fragile connection may be short-lived. They find safety and familiarity in an old bed within her abandoned childhood home, where Sam reads her the closing lines of her favorite poem, T. S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. In a quiet, almost ceremonial moment, he reads:

Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

As the words settle over the room, Ruby’s life ebbs away with a final, serene smile. Sam places her in a boat and sets it adrift on the river. He swims beside the drifting craft for a while, watching as the current carries it away. When he finally peers into the boat, all that remains is his coat, the garment he had draped over Ruby and Silvy alike. He climbs back into the water and allows the boat to continue its slow, inexorable drift, a poignant reminder of the mysteries that linger long after a love story seems to have reached its end.
