The film unfolds around a looming apocalypse, set in motion by the imminent release of the Antichrist through a gateway sealed for a full millennium. This gateway can only be opened by a special key, guarded by an ancient order of the Templars who, in this story, trace their existence back to the last days of Jesus. The key is sought by a demonic spirit known as the Minion, a host-toting force that passes from one corpse to another whenever a body falls. The Minion’s first attempt to seize the key, at the close of the year 999, is foiled, and the sole surviving Templar charged with concealing the key escapes with it on a voyage toward the west, fleeing what was once called the “end of the world.”
A thousand years later, just before Christmas 1999, two city engineers discover a hidden Templar burial chamber beneath New York City. An archaeologist of Mohawk heritage, Karen Goodleaf, is tasked with examining the chamber and its contents, only to be confronted by the Minion’s onslaught. Before the Minion can claim the key, he is stopped by a man wearing priestly garb who delivers a fatal blow to the Minion’s current host and then seizes the key for himself. In the ensuing pursuit, Karen tags along with the mysterious savior, who reveals himself as Lukas Sadorov [Lukas Hassel], a Templar and former Spetsnaz operative who was sent by the head of his order to recover the key. Karen’s trust grows as she witnesses the Minion’s power firsthand, and she proposes a plan to hide the key in a nuclear-waste depository planted on the grounds of her childhood Mohawk reservation, where lingering radioactivity would, in theory, thwart the Minion’s ability to inhabit hosts. To implement this plan, she enlists the help of her grandfather, Michael Bear, a Mohawk shaman who works as a foreman at the depository plant, to gain access to the facility.
Yet the Minion’s power remains relentless, hopping into new bodies that cross paths with his former hosts and continuing the chase. He eventually possesses Karen’s former archeology tutor, Professor Schulman, who is aiding the NYPD in the serial murder investigation, and uses this opportunity to turn the police against Lukas. After killing Karen’s grandfather and disguising himself in a radiation suit, the Minion tricks Lukas into handing over the key and escapes to Jerusalem, the location of the Templars’ sanctuary and the hidden gate to Hell within its crypts.
The Minion reaches the Templar headquarters in Jerusalem just ahead of Lukas and Karen. He catches the Templars by surprise and wipes out many of them. Bernard, a bold Templar Knight, manages to kill the Minion’s host, but his eagerness to prove himself leads to a fatal mistake—he allows the Minion to seize him and thus insert the key into the gate. Lukas and Karen arrive moments later; Karen attempts to remove the key from the lock, while Lukas battles the possessed Bernard and destroys him. In the climactic moment, they manage to keep the gate from opening as the final seal breaks, leaving the order decimated but not defeated.
In the aftermath, Lukas resolves to rebuild the Templar order, and Karen chooses to join him, signaling the dawn of a renewed generation sworn to guard the gate and the key. The story closes on a note of cautious hope, with the guardianship passing into new hands and the possibility that evil may be held at bay—for now—by a strengthened and reimagined order.
