Smuggling on the North Sea

A boat carries the contraband across the North Sea as Mickey Steele, Darren Nicholls, and Jack Whomes smuggle drugs to Essex. Nicholls is secretly a police informant who has reported the operation to D.I. Stone. Sensing trouble, Steele sends Whomes away on a separate boat to safeguard the shipment.

Essex boys emerge

The trio is revealed as the Essex-based suppliers to dealer Tony Tucker. Tucker, his right-hand man Craig Rolfe, and the volatile Pat Tate become the three core members of the Essex gang. Their influence grows as they bend the local drug trade to their will.

Dark turning point

The gang's power expands until a girl experiences a coma and dies after taking a 'pure' ecstasy pill. The incident draws serious police attention and threatens to unravel their operation. The death marks a turning point, escalating scrutiny from D.I. Stone and the authorities.

Amsterdam job

To keep Tucker and Tate appeased, Steele reveals a lucrative job in Amsterdam. Nicholls, Tate, Rolfe, and Steele manage the Amsterdam run together, successfully moving the operation inland. The alliance reshapes the group's criminal fabric.

Guilt over violence

Nicholls is wracked with guilt over the killings and the violence that has followed them. He contemplates the human cost of the cartel’s power and his own role in it. The burden weighs on him as the operation grows riskier.

Tate’s infidelity

Pat Tate begins an affair with a new partner and cheats on his girlfriend Karen, who ultimately leaves him for Steele. Tate's personal disarray feeds his already volatile temperament. The relationship turmoil adds further pressure to the gang.

Violent restaurant incident

In a burst of brutality, Tate assaults a pizza restaurant employee after being refused a bespoke pie for his new partner. The incident provides authorities with a potential charge against a gang member. D.I. Stone's investigation deepens as tensions rise.

Recruitment for Rettendon shipment

The Essex boys recruit veteran criminal Billy Carmichael and enlist Ronnie Walsh to bolster their operations. They secure a share of a lucrative guns-and-drugs shipment heading into Rettendon. The expansion signals the gang’s growing power and escalating risk.

Plan to eliminate rivals

Fearing exposure, Nicholls informs Steele about the Rettendon shipment and Steele crafts a plan to kill Rolfe, Tucker, and Tate to eliminate the threat. The scheming marks a turning point toward a violent purge. The tension among the core trio reaches a boiling point.

The Rettendon ambush

One night, Tate, Tucker, Rolfe and Walsh drive to a farm track in Rettendon, snort cocaine and joke about Walsh’s break with Carmichael. Two masked gunmen step out and open fire on the Range Rover, killing Rolfe, Tucker and Tate, but sparing Walsh. The night ends in a brutal, devastating massacre.

Discovery and aftermath

Steele and Whomes arrive to discover the carnage, and the next morning the bodies are found. D.I. Stone acknowledges that this outcome is precisely what he wanted, signaling a grim victory for the authorities. The team’s grip on power begins to crack in the wake of the killings.

Betrayal and pursuit

Nicholls is pressured by Steele to come in, but instead he calls the police to report the crimes. Whomes discovers this betrayal and confronts Nicholls with a shotgun. Nicholls escapes to a nearby field, his fate now sealed by betrayal and pursuit.

Chase and confrontation

Steele orders Whomes to return to the house and then pursues Nicholls to a farm, where he quietly tells him, 'you’re dying today.' The confrontation underscores the lengths to which Steele will go to protect his operation and silence a betrayer.
