Tanu Weds Manu 2011

*The story begins in London, where R. Madhavan plays Manoj “Manu” Sharma, a calm and disciplined doctor. He journeys back to India, specifically to Delhi, to meet his prospective bride, Tanuja “Tanu” Trivedi, played by Kangana Ranaut. Manu is accompanied by his parents, Mr. Sharma and Anju (played by Dipti Misra), as well as other family members. Their destination is the bustling town of Chaman Ganj in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where Tanu lives with her parents, Mr. Trivedi and Radha (played by Navni Parihar).

The initial meeting between Manu and Tanu is marked by subtle yet charming moments. Radha, Tanu’s mother, exaggerates her daughter’s virtues, claiming Tanu is a very domestic girl who cooked all the meals served that day. She also falsely states that Tanu is unwell with a fever, preventing her from meeting the guests, but she invites Manu to meet her in her room. When Manu first encounters Tanu, she is asleep, which he finds endearing. Take note of his gentle gesture when he kisses her cheeks while she is sleeping, appreciating her innocent, mischievous nature. Despite her playful and spirited personality, Manu is reserved and disciplined, making their contrasting personalities an interesting aspect of the story.

Soon enough, preparations are underway for the wedding. Following the auspicious announcement, the families leave for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, a traditional ritual. However, dark clouds gather in Manu’s heart when Tanu, during this pilgrimage, confesses that she already has a boyfriend named Awasthi, portrayed by Jimmy Shergill, a railway contractor. The revelation shocks Manu, especially when Tanu admits that she had been drinking vodka and taking sleeping pills during their meeting because she dislikes the idea of marriage. She dismisses her previous feelings and asks Manu to refuse the wedding, hinting at her desire to stay with her current boyfriend instead.

In the meantime, Pappi, a beloved relative of Manu played by Deepak Dobriyal, and Manu’s childhood friend, tries to keep his friend’s spirits high. Manu, feeling heartbroken and unsure about his future, considers other options and even visits potential brides, such as Ayushi, a girl with a slight physical disability, advised kindly by Raja, a close family friend played by Ravi Kishan. Manu confesses honestly that he is only going through the motions for his parents’ happiness because his heart belongs to Tanu.

Things take a turn when Pappi informs Manu about Jassi, a friend getting married in Punjab. Driven by a desire to win Tanu’s affection, Manu heads to Kapurthala, where he reconnects with her. Interestingly, Tanu is revealed to be the best friend of the bride, Payal Sinha, played by Swara Bhasker. The Punjab trip becomes a pivotal point as Manu tries to get Tanu’s attention, and they begin to share moments during wedding festivities.

During one such occasion, Tanu and Manu go on a date. Their interaction hints at lingering feelings, and Jassi, seeing promise, encourages them to meet again. Meanwhile, Tanu admits to her friends and Manu that she has had many boyfriends in her past and is not straightforward about her feelings. She even warns Manu that she might end up marrying her current boyfriend Awasthi, who is expected to arrive soon, as Tanu plans to marry him the following day.

In a desperate attempt, Manu tries to stay close to Tanu by traveling with her to the station, where she reveals her plans to marry Awasthi. Recognizing the pain, Raja, played by Ravi Kishan, who is also secretly in love with Tanu, urges Manu to consider his own future. Raja convinces Manu to attend Jassi and Payal’s wedding, and at the celebration, Manu is introduced to Tanu again.

As circumstances unfold, Manu learns that Raja, who initially seemed to be just a family friend, also harbors feelings for Tanu. There is an emotional scene at the registrar’s office, which is delayed due to timing issues. Raja then boldly confesses his love for Tanu and requests Manu to step back. Understanding that Raja wants to marry Tanu, Manu decides to leave her to her choice, even as his love remains unspoken.

In a dramatic climax, Raja and Manu arrive at Tanu’s house for a wedding, only for Tanu to declare her love for Manu to her parents. Raja, overwhelmed by the situation, is about to shoot Manu in a moment of despair but hesitates, remembering his promise to his family to marry Tanu. Ultimately, the story concludes with Tanu choosing Manu, and they finally get married, illustrating the triumph of love and destiny over societal and familial pressures.
