Camille Preaker, a journalist working at The Daily Post in Chicago, finds herself feeling increasingly dissatisfied with her job, which mainly involves reporting on crime and human tragedy. Her sense of frustration is compounded by a complicated relationship with her boss, Frank Curry, who supported her recovery after she was hospitalized due to self-harm. Camille has a troubled past, including a tendency to carve words into her skin driven by hallucinations, which affects her emotionally and mentally.

One day, Frank Curry assigns Camille to cover a disturbing case in her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri—a murdered girl named Ann Nash and a missing child named Natalie Keene. As she travels back to her roots, Camille begins to gather information from the local residents, including the family of Ann Nash. The local police seem unhelpful, but Chief Vickery hints that the likely culprit is a local resident. Tension heightens when a disturbing discovery is made: Natalie Keene’s body is found strangled, and with her teeth removed, suggesting a serial killer may be at work.

Despite the dangers, Camille is asked to stay in Wind Gap to continue her investigation. During her time there, she reconnects with her estranged mother, Adora (played by Patricia Clarkson), and her 13-year-old half-sister, Amma (played by Eliza Scanlen). Camille’s relationship with her mother has always been strained, especially after the tragic death of her younger sister Marian from an illness during Camille’s childhood. Amma, a manipulative teenager, hides her rebellious tendencies behind a facade of innocence.

While investigating the murders, Camille begins to develop a bond with a Kansas City detective, Richard Willis. They share a sexual relationship, though Camille keeps her scars hidden from him. Under Amma’s influence, Camille attends a party where she drinks and takes drugs, further complicating her mental state. One morning she wakes up to find her mother administering medication, which soon makes her feel ill—and she starts to suspect that Adora is not just a caring mother but may be suffering from factitious disorder imposed on another, meaning she intentionally harms those in her care.

Camille uncovers shocking truths—Adora was responsible for the death of Marian, and a nurse’s letter confirms her condition. It also becomes clear that Richard suspects Adora of the murders of Ann Nash and Natalie Keene. Camille’s suspicions grow, and she confronts her mother at her house, where Adora attempts to poison her and claims she just wants to “care for” her. Camille passes out but is saved when Richard and the police arrive to arrest Adora. The truth is revealed: Adora is charged with killing Marian, Ann Nash, and Natalie Keene.

Following her mother’s arrest, Camille faces emotional turmoil. Amma is sent to live with Camille in Chicago, seemingly adjusting well at first. However, the sinister truth about Amma emerges when a classmate is found murdered with six teeth pulled—the same gruesome detail as the previous victims. It is unveiled that Amma was responsible for the murders of Ann Nash and Natalie Keene, driven by jealousy over the attention their mother had given them. She is arrested for her crimes, leaving Camille devastated.

In her aftermath, Camille struggles deeply and resumes self-harming, but she is eventually supported by Curry and his wife, who take her in as their daughter. The haunting events leave a scar on Camille, yet she begins a tentative path toward healing, carrying the weight of her past and the horrors she uncovered.
