What Is Nitham Oru Vaanam About?

The premise of Nitham Oru Vaanam in 301 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

Arjun is a guarded young man whose obsessive-compulsive disorder shapes the way he moves through the world. His need for routine and familiarity makes him appear distant, even blunt, while his habit of imagining himself as the hero of every story he reads reveals a more expansive inner life. When romantic disappointment leaves him emotionally unsteady, the one release he has always known becomes a possible path back to himself.

At his doctor’s suggestion, Arjun begins reading about two couples: Veera and Meenakshi, whose bond is rooted in shared affection and everyday dreams, and Mathi and Prabha, whose love carries its own complications and uncertainties. Their contrasting personalities open doors to worlds unlike his own. What begins as a private reading exercise gradually becomes an invitation to look beyond his own limitations, question familiar assumptions, and consider the kinds of lives he might otherwise never imagine.

As Arjun grows more invested in the stories, companionship arrives in the form of Subha, a warm but guarded young woman with emotional questions of her own. She provides a gentle counterpoint to his guarded nature, while their shared search for understanding gives their connection a road-movie rhythm. Their conversations blend humor, uncertainty, and unspoken attraction, creating a space where both can confront feelings they would otherwise avoid.

Nitham Oru Vaanam unfolds as an intimate, reflective drama with a tender, optimistic tone. Its central concerns are not grand mysteries but the quiet difficulties of loving, coping, and remaining open to change. Through interwoven relationships and a growing sense of possibility, Arjun begins to understand that resilience does not mean ignoring pain, and happiness does not require a perfect life. The film’s emotional appeal lies in its gentle argument that even when certainty disappears, small moments of courage, companionship, and hope can redraw the path ahead.

The story follows Arjun (Ashok Selvan), a young man struggling with OCD, which makes him appear rude and closed off to others. He avoids leaving his comfort zone but possesses a vivid imagination, often picturing himself as the lead in the stories he reads. After a painful heartbreak when his fiancée, Janani, returns to her ex-boyfriend, Arjun falls into a deep depression. To help him heal, his doctor suggests he read two short stories about different couples: Veera and Meenakshi, and Mathi and Prabha.

In the first arc, Veera (Ashok Selvan) and Meenakshi (Shivathmika) are a happily married couple of engineers. However, the story takes a dark turn during a rainy day when a pregnant Meenakshi is left alone and Veera meets with a tragic accident. Frustrated by the cliffhanger, Arjun is directed to a second story about Mathi (Aparna Balamurali) and Prabha (Jiiva). Mathi is a free-spirited girl who runs away from her wedding, only to encounter Prabha, a man suffering from a love failure. Just as Prabha is about to marry her with her father Senniyappan’s (N. Azhagamperumal) blessing, Mathi collapses due to a sudden medical emergency, and the story ends abruptly.

Driven by a need for closure, Arjun travels to meet the real-life people behind these stories, accompanied by Subhatra (Ritu Varma). Subha is dealing with her own internal trauma after being dumped by her boyfriend for another woman. In Kolkata, they discover that while Veera passed away in a building crash, Meenakshi turned her grief into motivation, becoming a successful basketball coach.

Continuing their journey to Himachal Pradesh, they learn that Prabha is actually a jovial Deputy Superintendent of Police. Despite Mathi’s battle with cancer, the couple remained happy and devoted to one another. Prabha shares a vital lesson with Arjun:

we have to accept some things in life and move on.

This realization transforms Arjun (Ashok Selvan), who learns to appreciate the small joys of life. He helps Subha (Ritu Varma) find the courage to confront her ex-boyfriend, leading to a chaotic but liberating encounter. The film concludes with Arjun and Subha confessing their love for each other as they move forward into a new chapter of their lives.
