Obi arrives, murder follows

A man hurries to his tenement flat and finds an obi, a glass bottle filled with graveyard dirt and feathers, on the kitchen table. When the obi smashes, he is thrown through the window and dies, a brutal omen of the horrors to come.

Cemetery desecration reported

Fr. Goodman reports the desecration of the cemetery at his church and recalls that the previous night he saw someone scoop dirt from a freshly-dug grave before the person fled. The incident hints at obi making and dark forces at work.

Investigation begins at hostel

Goodman explains to Inspector Hollis that the desecration involved making an obi, and they travel to the Commonwealth Hostel to meet its head, Jim Benson. Benson denies any connection between the hostel and the unrest among the students.

Benson falls ill at lunch

During lunch at the hostel, Benson collapses with stomach problems while Amizan is seen nearby. The incident unsettles the investigators but provides little concrete information about the obi.

Danny detained amid gang tensions

Hollis asks Anderson to speak with Danny, a Jamaican student detained after a violent street fight. The fight pits rival Lloyd and Spady gangs, though Danny was not involved and was simply returning to the hostel.

Alderson orders the obi disposed

Alderson tells Amizan to dispose of the obi and burn it. Amizan refuses, hinting at dangerous consequences if the artefact is mishandled.

Alderson burns the obi

Alderson carries the obi to Amizan's hut furnace and orders it burnt. Amizan again refuses to cooperate, keeping his voodoo paraphernalia hidden.

Dance party yields more omens

After an end of term dance at the hostel, Alderson walks Tuttle home and a decapitated, bloody cockerel is found hanging from a tree. Benson discovers a second obi in his liquor cabinet and becomes increasingly afraid of its power.

Exorcism and the obi gift

The next day, more dead cockerels are burned as Goodman performs a ritual exorcism. Amizan goes to Danny's room and hands him another obi, telling him it is time to visit their friend.

Danny delivers obi to Lloyd

Danny delivers the obi to Lloyd, who explains that Spady wants him dead. Danny is frightened as he collects the money for the order.

Gravel omen and Benson's accusation

At the hostel, Alderson brings Danny to Benson. Danny fears entering because gravel outside the door seems to trap something evil inside. Benson accuses Danny of placing the obis and smashes the second obi; Danny screams and runs.

Benson is murdered

The next morning, Benson is found dead, stabbed with a decorative spear. Hollis arrives angry that Alderson had not told him about the obis, while Alderson remains in shock.

Danny locked in his room; Amizan accusation

Dupree reports that Danny has locked himself in his room. Hollis breaks down the door and finds Danny hysterical, insisting that Amizan shoved the spear under his door.

Investigation at Amizan's hut

Danny and others go to Amizan's hut. Amizan's body lies on a table, covered with a sheet, with voodoo paraphernalia nearby and £200 found in the back room from selling obis.
