In Kuvukiland, a kingdom in Southern Africa, a baby named Mr. Bones [Leon Schuster] arrives alive from a nearby airplane crash and grows into the bone-throwing prophesier of the realm. King Tsonga [Fats Bookholane] rules Kuvukiland and longs for a male heir; after seventeen daughters, he nearly loses hope, until a memory surfaces of fathering a boy decades earlier in Sun City. He immediately sends Mr. Bones to locate the future prince.

Meanwhile, in Sun City, golf star Vince Lee [David Ramsey], known as “The Prince,” arrives with his coach, The Wild Boar, for a tournament. Casino owner Zach Devlin [Robert Whitehead] places a huge bet on Vince to win. Just before the action begins, a freak accident occurs when a passing plane drops a wild boar on The Wild Boar. The coach is knocked out of commission and kept in a hospital, leaving Vince to improvise on his own. Without his mentor, Vince falters, until he meets the eccentric Mr. Bones, who believes him to be the true prince and grants him a lucky streak. Vince nearly wins the game, but Mr. Bones remembers his mission and halts a perfect putt. The moment leaves Vince embarrassed, retires from the spotlight, and then crosses paths with Laleti [Jane Benney], a local singer who captures his attention. Mr. Bones notices this and, in a surprising move, impersonates Laleti to abduct Vince.

The next day, Wild Boar escapes from the hospital and joins Laleti and her mother in the search for Vince. Enraged by Vince’s underwhelming performance and the disappearances, Zach Devlin organizes a helicopter-guided search, accompanied by two henchmen. After a string of comic mishaps, the group converges near Kuvukiland. Mr. Bones introduces Vince to King Tsonga, but Vince’s fear of animals leads him to strike the king with a stick, prompting Tsonga to disown him and prepare to die. The casino owner closes in, but Vince escapes. He discovers Laleti tied to a tree with a lion nearby, and summoning courage, he drives the beast away. Witnessing this, King Tsonga decides he does not want to die.

The pursuing casino crew returns, yet Mr. Bones—with a helpful elephant—causes the helicopter to crash. Tsonga proclaims Vince as his son, but asks Mr. Bones to perform the bone-throwing again to confirm the prophecy. As Mr. Bones casts the bones, Wild Boar arrives, revealing that he is the actual prince.

The film closes with Mr. Bones, King Tsonga, and Wild Boar watching from Kuvukiland as Vince Lee, now married to Laleti, wins the Masters golf tournament.

Mr. Bones Spoiler-Free Summary

Discover the spoiler-free summary of Mr. Bones (2001). Get a concise overview without any spoilers.

In the sun‑blazed realm of Kuvukiland, a quirky kingdom tucked away in the heart of Southern Africa, ancient prophecy and modern ambition collide. The land is ruled by King Tsonga, a sovereign whose yearning for a male heir drives the kingdom’s destiny, and whose court is alive with the colorful rituals of a people who still speak to the spirits through bone‑throwing divination. The film sets a playful tone, balancing the lush, almost mythic vibrancy of the tribal world with a wink‑filled commentary on the absurdities that arise when tradition meets the unexpected.

Enter Mr. Bones, a charismatic medicine man known for his uncanny bone‑casting talents and a reputation for seeing beyond the ordinary. Charged by the king, he embarks on a mission that promises both comedic mischief and a touch of destiny: to locate the long‑lost son who might secure the future of the throne. His journey takes him far beyond the savannas, into the glittering, high‑stakes world of a Sun City golf tournament, where the very notion of royalty is reimagined on pristine greens.

At the heart of that tournament is Vince Lee, an American golf prodigy whose nickname “The Prince” hints at both his talent and the larger expectations placed upon him. Vince’s world of polished clubs and televised competition stands in stark contrast to the earthy, ritual‑laden atmosphere of Kuvukiland, setting up a comedic clash of cultures. Alongside him is Laleti, a vibrant local singer whose presence adds a melodic thread to the unfolding tale, hinting at unexpected chemistry and the pull of a world far removed from the fairway’s glare.

The film weaves together the larger-than-life personalities of a mystical king, a mischievous healer, and a confident athlete, all under the watchful eye of a kingdom that believes fate can be tossed like bones. With a tone that swings between slapstick comedy and gentle satire, the story promises a journey where cultural collision becomes a source of laughter, curiosity, and a hint of destiny waiting just beyond the next swing.
