B.J. graduates high school and faces his college options. His friends pressure him toward Pepperdine, while he’s accepted to Morehouse; they decide to take a cross-country road trip to California to tour Pepperdine's campus.

Family intervention leads to road trip

Brian visits Madea's house to figure out how to guide B.J. Joe is there as well, and they debate parenting vs. supporting B.J.'s choices. After some disagreement, Joe commits to taking B.J. on the college road trip to California.

Departure in Ruby the Buick

They leave in Joe's Buick, Ruby, starting the long drive toward California. Joe discards B.J.'s phone to minimize distractions, and B.J. accepts an old-school Polaroid camera for memories instead of a phone.

First stop on Beale Street

The duo makes a stop on Beale Street in Tennessee where they reconnect with Joe’s old friend Geraldine. The encounter gives Joe a window into his past as they continue toward California.

Motel night in Tennessee

They check into a motel where the concierge, who knows Joe, allows them to stay only if they leave early. The stay underscores the rough, improvised nature of their journey.

Destiny enters and the Texas stop

In Texas they visit a whorehouse run by Pearl, where Destiny, a young woman who has been trafficked, is introduced. Destiny reveals she wants to leave Texas and escape her situation, while Joe's behavior creates tension on the trip.

Trunk concealment and tire trouble

Destiny hides in the trunk as they push toward New Mexico. A tire blows out on the highway, prompting Joe to fetch the jack, and Destiny is discovered hiding in the trunk. Joe then ejects B.J. and Destiny onto the roadside.

Desert abandonment and call to Brian

Left stranded, B.J. and Destiny walk along the highway until Destiny uses a phone to call Brian. The call drops, but Brian traces the number and learns Destiny has run away from a trafficker gang.

Morning at the motel and history lesson

The next morning, Destiny shows B.J. that the photos Joe took were meant to illustrate real Black history beyond a souvenir. They discuss Lorraine Motel and Emmett Till’s creek, among other historic sites, and decide to visit a library to learn more.

Destiny takes B.J. to a library to deepen his understanding of Black history. The journey shifts from surface tour to educational exploration as they commit to learning more.

Gang pursuit and police intervention

Brian locates Destiny at the library as the gang closes in, leading to a desert chase. A team of police arrives and the gang flees, with Brian taking the lead in protecting them.
