What Is Holy Water About?
The premise of Holy Water in 321 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In the modest Ulster village of Killcoulin’s Leap, the echoes of a once‑thriving spa town linger in the stone‑cobbled streets and the famed Holy Well that still draws hopeful pilgrims. Time has softened the bustle, leaving a community that clings to memory while the present feels thin—jobs are scarce, the future uncertain, and the town’s charm seems poised on the edge of fading. The landscape is quiet yet gritty, its slow‑moving rhythm punctuated by the wind off the Atlantic and the soft murmur of water that once promised healing.
Podger Byrnes, the local postman, carries the weight of routine with a restless spark that refuses to settle. Around him, his closest friends—Donal, a pragmatic hand‑to‑mouth dreamer; Sean, whose quick wit masks deeper anxieties; and Thomas, a gentle soul anchored in the village’s modest hospitality—form a tight‑knit quartet that balances camaraderie with the pressure of dwindling prospects. Their friendships are laced with both affection and the occasional friction that comes from years of shared hardship, each character offering a distinct lens on the collective longing for change.
Against this backdrop, the four find themselves at a crossroads, spurred by the looming threat of layoffs and the town’s quiet desperation. A daring, unconventional idea begins to take shape, one that promises to shake the monotony of their daily lives and could potentially re‑ignite the fading spirit of Killcoulin’s Leap. The plan is as audacious as it is hopeful, reflecting both the characters’ willingness to gamble with fate and the undercurrent of mischief that bubbles beneath the surface of the village’s solemn reputation.
The tone of the story wavers between darkly comic and tenderly human, capturing the absurdity of small‑town schemes while honoring the genuine desire for renewal. As the friends gesture toward an uncertain horizon, the Holy Well stands as a silent witness—its ancient waters hinting at both the weight of history and the possibility of something new bubbling just below the surface.

Set in Ulster, four friends living in the tiny village of Killcoulin’s Leap (once known for its spa and holy well) are tired of just scraping by. Soon to be laid-off, postman Podger Cornelius Clarke comes up with the plan to hijack a truck carrying a load of Viagra and then unload it in Amsterdam.
Donal Lochlann Ó Mearáin and Sean Cian Barry dress up as road workers, and Podger and Thomas as nuns. Successfully commandeering the Pfizer truck, they find a transponder and throw it into a current bound for the Atlantic. The four at first believe they got away with it, however, American investigator Cory Williams, Linda Hamilton has shown up to find the missing little blue tablets. In a panic, the friends hide the stash down the Well of the Virgin Mary, the water source for the entire town.
While the four are having their morning tea in Thomas’ hotel, both the private security company investigators and a news crew check in. The four head in search of the transponder to wipe it of prints and send it on. The investigators interrogate them shortly after they do so, but let the group go.
Sean had gone to confession, essentially broadcasting to the whole town their heist, as the priest is chatty after a drink. That night, the four are summoned to the pub. The entire parish knows and promises to keep quiet. Three months later, Killcoulin’s Leap is thriving, thanks to publicity about their magical waters.
