Opening island murder

The film opens with a man being chased across the island and decapitated by a mysterious pursuer. The brutality establishes a deadly mood for what follows. The killer's presence hovers over the island from the very first scene.

Arrival and introductions

A group of college students—Emily, Johnny, Ricky, Tim, Maddy, Q, and Sylvia—arrive on the island for a field trip. Captain J.T. Bates ferries them to their destination, where they meet Vincent King and Mary Shelley, the hosts. Mary begins filming the group on a handheld recorder, announcing her ambition to be a director.

First murder discovered

Mr. Carl Argento heads off the island to retrieve equipment, but when he returns to the boat he discovers J.T. Bates murdered. The discovery marks the first killing connected to their visit and plunges everyone into confusion. Suspicion starts to spread as the group struggles to understand what happened.

Clown sighting and another murder

That night, a figure dressed as a clown startles Q, who later warns the others about the encounter. The warning goes unheeded as the group goes to bed, unaware that Argento has also been murdered. The island's safety feels increasingly fragile.

Sheriff's arrival and questioning

The next day, Sheriff Stoker arrives on the island to investigate a missing hunter and questions Vincent and Mary. They deny any knowledge of the hunter, deepening the mystery. Tension rises as disappearances continue to haunt the group.

Tim and Sylvia attacked

Tim and Sylvia sneak into the forest for a private moment, but they are attacked by the killer. Tim is killed with a chainsaw, and Sylvia is captured and locked in an underground dungeon. The group remains oblivious to their friends' fates while dinner proceeds.

Phone down, second bonfire, clown again

At dinner, Emily becomes uneasy about the disappearances while Vincent and Mary insist there is nothing to worry about. The phone lines are down, so the group holds a second bonfire on the beach to maintain morale. During this gathering, Q is killed by the clown.

Snuff film revealed

Vincent and Mary secretly watch videos of murders they have committed and reveal their snuff-film project to Emily, Johnny, Ricky, and Maddy. The revelation confirms the danger and shows how far the couple will go. Sheriff Stoker’s earlier skepticism now seems tragically prophetic.

Sheriff Stoker is murdered

Stoker, driven by suspicion, returns to the island only to be murdered by Vincent and Mary with an axe. The couple tightens their grip as the survivors realize the threat is real. The survivors' hope for rescue fades as fear takes over the island.

Maddy and Willy plot escape

Maddy is knocked unconscious by Vincent and Mary, then later wakes to be freed by Willy, who hints at escaping on his boat. He suggests there is a way off the island if they can reach him. The plan to break away begins to take shape among the survivors.

Betrayal and attacks escalate

Vincent bites Mary’s neck, killing her in a brutal act. Ricky attacks Vincent but is shot dead in the ensuing struggle. The survivors are driven to desperate measures as they fight to stay alive.

Dungeon showdown and the piranha pool

Johnny wakes in the dungeon and finds Sylvia still trapped in a cage above a pool of piranha. Willy frees Johnny, and Vincent and Emily arrive to confront them. Willy is fatally shot by Emily, Vincent is wounded, and Sylvia plummets into the piranha pool after the chaos; Emily is killed by Sylvia in a final reversal.
