Goliath 2017

Goliath II is a miniature 8-year-old Indian elephant who stands at an astonishingly small height, a detail that frames his early life as he tries to win the respect of his family and herd. His father, the biggest elephant in the group, pays him little attention because of his diminutive size, while his mother offers warmth and encouragement that keep Goliath hopeful. A curious tiger named Raja prowls the jungle with a predatory interest in elephants, but he is kept at bay by Goliath’s vigilant mother. Along the way, other hazards—such as Eloise, another herd member, who nearly steps on Goliath, and a crocodile that nearly makes a meal of him—underscore the constant dangers of their world and the protective instinct of his family.

As the herd marches through the dense jungle, danger and curiosity pull Goliath away from the line. He follows two slow snails, becomes separated, and finds himself lost. His mother and Raja embark on a search, and they eventually locate him in a cramped snail hole. After a brief tug-of-war with Raja, Goliath is rescued, but his mother is firm in her rebuke. She scolds him for disobeying her warnings and assigns him a timeout, placing him in a bird’s nest to cool his heels. Frustrated by what he sees as infantile treatment, Goliath yearns for autonomy and begins to doubt whether he will ever be able to fend for himself.

That night, driven by a fierce desire to prove himself, Goliath escapes from the herd and vows not to return. Surrounded by unfamiliar jungle noises, he grows increasingly frightened until he is awakened by Raja, who seizes the moment to challenge him. In a moment of desperation, Goliath cries out for his mother, who comes to his aid and forces Raja away, ultimately driving the tiger toward a deadly fate in the crocodile’s mouth. Raja disappears from view, and Goliath’s desertion is framed as a serious misstep that casts a shadow over his relationship with his father.

The next day, the herd is set in motion again, but a new fear emerges in a small, seemingly harmless creature: a mouse. The mouse startsleads the elephants into a panic, sending them rushing to the safety of the river. The mouse taunts Goliath, declaring that elephants should fear mice, and a tense confrontation escalates until Goliath, despite his size, finds himself holding the mouse over a treacherous cliff above the same hungry crocodile. The mouse pleads for mercy, and Goliath chooses to spare him. This moment of mercy marks a turning point in his standing within the herd: his father’s fear gives way to a newly earned respect, and Goliath is finally recognized as a capable presence within the group, rising to be seen as the top elephant of the herd.

Through danger, discipline, and a hard-won act of mercy, the story of Goliath II unfolds as a gentle exploration of growing up, finding one’s place, and discovering that courage isn’t just about size, but about choices that reflect heart and resolve.
