Ansel finds himself in a challenging situation as he delivers a presentation on cults at a hotel. Initially convinced that the presentation would secure him a complimentary meal, he soon realizes that his expectations are dashed when the hotel staff kicks him out due to a misunderstanding about the free room, which was only offered for one night. This unfortunate turn of events leaves him with no choice but to sleep in his car after finishing his talk.

During the presentation, attendees Paul and Evelyn approach Ansel, drawn by his expertise in cults. They plead for his help to liberate their daughter, Claire, who has become entrenched in a cult. Ansel agrees to listen to their desperate plea in exchange for a meal, but soon informs them that his services come at a steep price, often reaching thousands of dollars, with no guarantee of success. Adding to his financial woes, Ansel is also under pressure from his business manager, Terry, who is eagerly awaiting repayment of a significant debt.

The plot thickens as Ansel receives a document from Mick, a man with an air of superiority and a refined accent, providing him with detailed instructions about the steps he needs to undertake to assist Claire. His money troubles largely stem from his divorce, where his ex-wife gained the earnings from his first book, while his second book struggles to make sales.

In a rather drastic move, Ansel decides to hire goons to kidnap Claire, who is then taken to a nearby motel while Paul and Evelyn remain just a wall away. Unbeknownst to Claire, her parents are close by, but Ansel assures her that he is on her side, claiming that as long as she complies, she will be unharmed by his hired thugs. However, Claire’s newfound religious beliefs empower her to resist returning to her past identity. She openly rejects being called Claire, viewing her former self as merely a shadow of someone who no longer exists, as her concepts of time and identity have drastically shifted under the influence of her cult.

Although Ansel exhibits a therapeutic approach akin to that of a psychologist, his intentions can be interpreted in various ways. This scenario creates an emotional tension between the idea of deprogramming Claire and the fear that he may not have her best interests at heart, which is a concern echoed by her anxious parents.

As events unfold, Claire ultimately discovers that her parents are adjacent in the next room. They even bring clothes for her, which represents her former life, but she hesitates to wear them, expressing happiness at their presence while further insisting on her disassociation from her previous identity. Despite her initial resistance, there are subtle indications that Claire might eventually reconnect with her old self.

Meanwhile, Terry’s insistence on receiving his money puts further pressure on Ansel, leading him to request half of his fee from Paul. Even though Paul protests, Ansel is desperate to avoid the aggressive collection tactics of Terry’s goons. As Ansel hands over the payment to Terry, the seemingly friendly demeanor of Terry gives way to a more menacing undertone.

This sets the stage for a gripping question: Can Ansel truly help Claire reclaim her former life? Will he manage to navigate his own precarious circumstances and find a way to settle his debts with Terry? Only time will tell as the story progresses through these intertwined lives at the motel.
