The movie begins on the planet Cybertron, where a ferocious battle unfolds between the Autobots and Decepticons. Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) is seen fiercely fighting enemies, calling in help from a small Autobot known as B-127 (Dylan O’Brien). B-127 arrives, bravely tackling the Decepticons to protect his leader, but his mission is crucial—sending a distress signal aboard a launch pad so that Optimus can send him to Earth as a refuge and a new base for the Autobots. As the Decepticons rush to destroy the launch site, B-127 makes it off Cybertron just in time, sacrificing himself in the chaos as Optimus stays behind to continue the fight.
Fast forward to the year 1987, in a small California town called Brighton Falls. Here, Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) wakes up to start her day, heading out to meet her family—her mother, Sally (Pamela Adlon), her younger brother Otis (Jason Drucker), and her stepfather Ron (Stephen Schneider). Still grief-stricken and struggling to accept her father’s death and her feelings about Ron, Charlie begins her day with a mix of sadness and determination. She heads to her job at a local carnival, where her coworker, Memo (Jorge Lindeborg, Jr.), tries to get her attention out of his affection for her, but she remains distant. Later, she accidentally spills lemonade on a classmate, earning mocking remarks from popular girls led by Tina (Gracie Dzienny), adding to her feelings of alienation. At home, she attempts to repair a car she and her late father once worked on, but her resolve wavers, and she feels helpless.
Meanwhile, Sector 7 agents are conducting a training exercise involving paintball guns when Agent Jack Burns (John Cena) boasts about his victory, only to witness B-127 crash-land from space. The agents chase the Autobot but are interrupted by the arrival of Blitzwing (David Sobolov), a powerful Decepticon who immediately attacks them. Blitzwing demands information about Optimus Prime and other Autobots, threatening B-127, whom he captures after ripping out his voice box, rendering him speechless. Despite B-127’s protests of innocence, Blitzwing attempts to kill him but is thwarted when B-127 uses a grenade to destroy the Decepticon.
B-127’s systems weaken as his memory core starts to fail, prompting him to scan a bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle before finally shutting down. Charlie, on her way to her Uncle Hank’s garage, notices a yellow Beetle parked there, and on her birthday, she persuades him to let her take it home after promising to work in his garage for a year. She hides the car from her mother, Sally, and later discovers B-127’s face beneath the car’s hood, which reacts instinctively, transforming into his Autobot form. Charlie quickly names him Bumblebee after hearing him make a buzzing sound, which she associates with a bumblebee. Their bond begins to grow as Bumblebee’s presence triggers a galaxy-wide signal that alerts two Decepticons—Shatter (Angela Bassett) and Dropkick (Justin Theroux)—to the location of the Autobots on Earth, as well as to Bumblebee’s presence.
While Charlie helps the injured Bumblebee, she notices that someone from her school recognizes her and mocks her about her father. She pushes back feeling overwhelmed by her grief. When Charlie’s mom, Sally, takes the car to the vet, Charlie sneaks out on her bicycle to reconnect with Bumblebee, leading to a tense yet tender moment as she gains his trust. Charlie’s attempts to repair Bumblebee’s internal systems involve playing music from her tapes, but he initially rejects her choices, leading her to share memories of her father—specifically a heartfelt moment involving a tape labeled “Charlie’s Dive Meet,” which reminds her of her father’s last recording of her.
As Charlie and Bumblebee grow closer, she begins to open up about her past, including her father’s death, and her feelings of helplessness. She tries to push past her fears to enjoy small moments, such as attempting to jump off a cliff into the water, a challenge from her classmates that she ultimately declines because of the pain and memories it stirs. Meanwhile, her efforts to fix Bumblebee lead to mischief with her friends, Memo and others, which eventually spirals into chaos when Bumblebee, in a moment of accidental excitement, wrecks Tina’s car after being egged and provoked.
Things take a turn when Charlie’s garage becomes chaotic due to Bumblebee’s playful antics, which include crashing into her household, causing a power outage and a surge that sets off an Energon signal detected by the Decepticons. This attracts the attention of Sector 7 agents, who discover Bumblebee causing trouble at Charlie’s house. As the story progresses, Bumblebee is captured by the Sector 7 agents after a fierce fight and a series of confrontations with the Decepticon scouts, Shatter and Dropkick, who are determined to eliminate him and any other Autobots on Earth.
The captivity leads to Bumblebee’s system being tampered with, trying to erase his memories, but Charlie and her friends come to his rescue. Using electric cables and their determination, they manage to revive Bumblebee, who then recalls his purpose and his previous battles. His reactivation fuels him with rage against the Decepticons, prompting a fierce fight at the tower where Shatter and Dropkick are about to call more Decepticon reinforcements to Earth.
During this epic clash, Bumblebee fights desperately to stop the Decepticons from unleashing chaos. He manages to tear apart Dropkick, wrapping a chain around him, and fights Shatter with all his strength. Just as Shatter attempts to kill Charlie, Bumblebee intervenes heroically, saving her at the cost of a dam being destroyed in the process. The resulting flood pulls Bumblebee under the water, but Charlie dives in to save him. The Sector 7 agent Jack Burns (John Cena) helps manage the chaos, and together they watch Bumblebee emerge, battered but alive, proving his loyalty and bravery.
In the climax, Charlie and Bumblebee work together to disable the Decepticon signal device that would summon more enemies. Bumblebee fights off Dropkick in a spectacular showdown, ultimately destroying him. When Shatter reappears with deadly intent, Bumblebee engages her in a fierce battle, tearing her apart with a chain, saving Charlie from danger. During the chaos, Burns’ jet is attacked by Shatter, but Bumblebee rescues him, earning respect for his heroism. The fight ends with Bumblebee pushing Shatter into the water and holding her off until help arrives.
After the battle, Bumblebee bids a heartfelt farewell to Charlie, knowing his duty calls him away. He scans a new Camaro form, transforming from Bumblebee to his new vehicle. With tears in her eyes, Charlie says goodbye, understanding that Bumblebee’s place is with the Autobots but still feeling grateful for their friendship. She returns home to her reunited family and begins to heal from her grief.
As the film concludes, Optimus Prime meets Bumblebee on Earth, and Bumblebee shares his new name, symbolizing his renewed purpose. Meanwhile, Charlie finally repairs her father’s car, taking it for a drive, embracing her memories and her newfound hope, knowing that the Autobots and her loved ones are now part of her journey.
