In Winston High School’s Homecoming night, a tight-knit circle of couples heads into the celebration with plans for a private after-hours gathering. A killer wearing a fireman’s mask and jacket emerges and strikes in the night, ending Annie’s life in a brutal act that uses the school spirit baton as a weapon. Her death reopens old wounds and triggers a cascade of fear and paranoia across the campus.

In the wake of the murder, the teens find notes in their lockers bearing the ominous message “Happy Homecoming” written in blood. The clues spark suspicion and division: Jaclyn tells Loren and Steve that Allen might still be haunted by Billy’s death, while Principal Patterson tries to navigate mounting anxiety and personal temptation as he attempts to keep a lid on the chaos. Sheriff Corbin—Billy’s father—visits, placing blame on the students and stirring a bitter quarrel between the town and the graduates. The sense of danger grows as the group—Wade, Cassie, Loren, Steve, Nora, Robby, and Jaclyn—band together to keep each other safe, visiting Annie’s house only to find it empty and cold. The tension ratchets higher when Mrs. Patterson nearly catches her husband looking at Cassie’s pictures on his computer, a moment that exposes the fragility of trust beneath their veneer of normalcy.

As the night of the Homecoming dance unfolds, Robby and Nora are killed after a late-night tryst in a pickup, another grim reminder that the killer is watching and calculating. The survivors gather for a pre-party, drinking from Wade’s stolen bottle of alcohol as they steel themselves for the main event. At the dance, Miss Russell’s jabs toward coach Larry Connally echo through the gym as the atmosphere sours. Steve spikes the punch with Wade’s booze, a reckless act that foreshadows the danger to come. Cassie is crowned Homecoming queen, a bright moment that briefly distracts from the unease gripping the hall. But the danger is far from over. Wade disappears after searching for his bottle, and Cassie is pursued through the corridors by the unseen killer. A janitor, Fred, intervenes briefly before he is fatally wounded by the stalker’s weapon, and Cassie bolts back toward the dance floor, only to fall victim just as she seems about to reach her friends.

Karl is killed while patrolling outside the dance, and Jaclyn discovers Cassie’s severed head in a toilet—a brutal discovery that rattles everyone. The killer seizes Jaclyn, but Steve arrives to pull her to safety. Jaclyn collapses as Steve and Loren flee in opposite directions; Steve is crushed by the retracting bleachers in the gym, and Loren is ultimately captured, bound to a chair with her dead friends and Principal Patterson in view of the murderer. The killer reveals herself to be Mrs. Patterson, who had once been involved with Billy and now seeks revenge for his death. She douses the room in gasoline and, as a match is lit, Jaclyn arrives and engages in a desperate struggle. When Jaclyn is knocked aside, Mrs. Patterson stabs her husband through the heart with the spirit baton, but Jaclyn recovers, frees Loren, and hurls Mrs. Patterson onto the spear, impaling her chest. Loren and Jaclyn stagger to safety, discovering Janitor Fred wounded in the aftermath as they escape the carnage.

The two survivors graduate and walk the stage to mark the end of a nightmare that began with a single night of misjudged bravado and spiraled into a season of fear. Yet the dread lingers: as they accept their diplomas, another figure in cap and gown stands in the shadows, gripping the spirit baton, suggesting that the torment may not be over after all. What began as a high-spirited Homecoming ends with a chilling reminder that the past can return in the most lethal of forms.
