What Is Babysitter About?

The premise of Babysitter in 234 words, with nothing given away. The full story and the ending follow below.

markdown Cédric Roberge appears to have constructed a stable, enviable life as a 42-year-old engineer with a suburban home and a loving wife, Nadine. However, the veneer of their domestic idyll is thin, stretched by the exhaustion of new parenthood and Nadine’s silent battle with post-partum depression following the birth of their daughter, Léa. Their world is one of quiet tensions, where unspoken grievances and the strain of changing roles fester just beneath the surface of their daily routine.

A single night out catalyzes a dramatic unraveling when a drunken incident places Cédric at the center of a public controversy. Captured on video and broadcast to a judgmental audience, the event results in his indefinite suspension and forces him to confront the harsh realities of modern accountability. As Nadine makes arrangements to return to the workforce, Cédric finds himself adrift, grappling with a tarnished reputation and the sudden demands of being the primary caregiver in a household fraught with emotional distance.

Into this fractured environment steps Amy, a young, enigmatic babysitter whose arrival marks a distinct shift in the family’s trajectory. With a cheerful demeanor that borders on mysterious, she introduces an unpredictable energy that contrasts sharply with the couple’s dour mood. Her presence serves as a catalyst, complicating the household dynamics and forcing both Cédric and Nadine to confront difficult questions about toxic masculinity, responsibility, and the roles they play within their marriage.

Spoilers ahead

Cédric Roberge, a 42-year-old engineer, and his wife Nadine Nadine are a suburban couple who have just welcomed their first child, a daughter named Léa. One night, while at an MMA event with friends, Cédric gets drunk and kisses Chantal Tremblay on the side of the head during a live television broadcast. The moment goes viral overnight, and he is indefinitely suspended from his job. Nadine, who is grappling with postpartum depression, decides to end her maternity leave and return to work, leaving Cédric to take care of Léa. Instead, Nadine secretly checks into a local motel for some alone time.

Cédric’s brother Jean-Michel, a journalist who wrote a scathing op-ed on the incident, confronts him about his misogynistic tendencies. Nadine suggests that Cédric write a letter of apology to Chantal. Meanwhile, Cédric hires a cheery and mysterious babysitter, Amy. Later that day, Nadine arrives home while Cédric is out and is surprised to meet Amy. That night, Cédric is aghast when Nadine admits that she has been pretending to go to work while hiding out in a motel. Assisted by Jean-Michel, Cédric seeks to redeem himself by writing Sexist Story, a book featuring 200 letters of apology to women everywhere, including Chantal as well as Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian.

One day, Cédric and Nadine are stunned when Amy arrives at their house in a sexy French maid uniform, claiming that wearing a uniform motivates her. While alone with Amy in her bedroom, Nadine begins to suffer a panic attack, and Amy calms her down. Later, Nadine wears a lavender cape that was gifted to her by Amy around the house, leaving Cédric and Jean-Michel puzzled. Amy, still dressed as a French maid, also gifts Nadine a servant bell and acts as her personal servant.

Cédric and Jean-Michel sign with a publishing executive who views Sexist Story as a potential bestseller. However, when Cédric’s friend Tessier Tessier recognizes Amy from a LARP event they attended for a mutual friend’s birthday where she was dressed as a “medieval hooker”, Jean-Michel pushes Cédric out and resolves to write the book himself. After Jean-Michel’s book launch, Cédric and Nadine go to the nearby woods to have sex, whereupon she attempts to peg him with a strap-on dildo (another gift from Amy), prompting Cédric to flee in horror.

Returning home that night, Nadine breaks down in tears and is consoled by Amy; it is implied that the two women have sex. Afterwards, when asked by Amy, Nadine informs her that she no longer needs her. As Cédric returns home the next morning, he sees Amy leaving the house and disappearing into the fog. Cédric then joins Nadine in bed, and they hold hands. Some time later, Jean-Michel appears on a talk show to promote Sexist Story and becomes emotional when reading an excerpt from the book dedicated to Amy. Nadine throws away Amy’s gifts, but the strap-on dildo is thrown back at her as the garbage truck drives off.

Themes

What Are the Themes of Babysitter?

3 ideas the story keeps returning to, among them Power Dynamics, Communication and Relationships.

  1. 01

    Power Dynamics

The film centers on how gender norms and public scrutiny redistribute power within intimate relationships. Cédric’s behavior triggers a cascade of judgment that affects both his career and his marriage. The creation of a book titled Sexist Story acts as a public act of control and a potential path to redemption. The tension reveals how authority can shift between private actions and public reactions.

  2. 02

    Communication

Miscommunication and performative apologies drive the plot forward. Amy’s arrival and the hidden dynamics between Nadine and Cédric show how words and gestures can blur boundaries. The book within the story becomes a mediated dialogue about women’s experiences, rather than a straightforward confession. The characters’ conversations—or lack thereof—shape trust and resentment.

  3. 03

    Relationships

Nadine’s postpartum experience and dependence on others test the couple’s bond. Amy’s presence introduces care, boundary complexity, and a shifting power balance. The ending leaves the relationship with a sense of ambiguity, where forgiveness and distance coexist. The film probes how intimate connections evolve under pressure and secrecy.

How Does Babysitter End?

The last act of Babysitter and what it means, in 186 words. The ending lands as ambiguous. Big spoilers: read the plot summary first if you have not seen it.

The final act, in full

In the end, Bee reveals herself not just as a teenage girl but as something much more mysterious and sinister. She is the leader of a coven involved in blood magic, and her youthful appearance is likely the result of dark, possibly ancient, rituals. Throughout the movie, she manipulates her followers and promises wishes in exchange for blood sacrifices, including killing Samuel in a ritual to gain power. The blood magic, the ancient spellbook, and her references to making deals with the devil suggest she may be centuries old or at least has been involved in dark occult practices for a long time. Her age and origin remain ambiguous, leaving her as an unsettling, almost supernatural figure who has found a way to stay young and powerful. The film leaves many questions unanswered about her true identity, origins, and motives, emphasizing the mysterious, possibly supernatural nature of her character. As the story concludes, Cole survives his night of chaos, narrowly escaping Bee and her cult, but the enigma surrounding Bee’s true nature remains unresolved, hinting that her story, and hers alone, may continue beyond this film.
