What’s After the Movie tells the emotionally charged story of Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s character, Kiara, and Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Akash, both living in the United States but facing their own personal tragedies. Kiara is based in San Francisco, while Akash is a New York investment banker. Their lives take a dramatic turn following their respective heartbreaks and absolute despair.

Akash finds himself in a financial nightmare after making a risky investment involving a bank loan of $12 million to purchase shares in a defunct company. Originally claiming the loan was only $1 million, his deception is revealed when the market crashes, rendering the investment worthless. This leads to a massive loss for his company and a looming financial catastrophe. Akash’s partners feel betrayed, as he had concealed the true loan amount, which lands him in deep trouble. Their disappointment and anger push Akash to the brink of despair, and he considers ending his life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.

On the same night, Kiara, also contemplating ending her life, is overwhelmed by grief after discovering her fiancé, Kunal, played by Zayed Khan, cheating on her. Their tragic moments converge at the bridge—both attempt suicide but are prevented by coastguards, which only prolongs their internal battles. In a series of failed suicide attempts involving car collisions and accidental falls, they manage to survive, only to find themselves hospitalized together.

As their circumstances worsen, Akash’s friend and partner, Deven (played by Joy Sengupta), visits him in the hospital to deliver news of the impending liquidation of their investment banking firm to cover their debts. Their belongings, including Akash’s home, have been confiscated by the bank. Facing imminent foreclosure and legal proceedings, both Akash and Kiara escape hospital rooms and cross paths in the hospital corridor.

Kiara introduces Akash to her home since his house has been taken, and their bond deepens amidst ongoing despair. Their shared sense of hopelessness drives them to attempt suicide multiple times—using plastic wraps, gas, and other means—yet somehow each effort fails. Through these attempts, they come to the realization that maybe their lives are meant for more, and they make a pact to live for just 20 more days, until December 31, 2009.

With time running out, they decide to pursue their unfulfilled dreams and desires. Akash confesses to Kiara that he is a virgin, having never had the chance to experience love or intimacy due to work commitments and academic focus. Kiara, owner of a car affectionately called “Blush,” helps Akash explore his desires, including helping him find a date so he can fulfill his wish of experiencing sex before they die.

Their journey takes them to the cold Atlantic Ocean, where, despite numerous obstacles, they attempt to swim, but Kiara falls overboard, and Akash rescues her. As they struggle against the freezing waters, their life-saving efforts intertwine with recounting their stories and regrets, illustrating their desire to embrace life rather than surrender to death.

However, after returning from their rescue, Kiara sinks into depression, attempting to end her life again by drinking bleach. She is rushed to the hospital, and Akash’s love for her grows stronger during her recovery. They decide to take a holiday to Las Vegas, where their friendship blossoms into something deeper, culminating in a tender moment of intimacy. Yet, Kiara confesses she still has feelings for her ex-fiancé, Kunal, and she chooses to reconcile with him, ending her relationship with Akash.

Heartbroken but resolute, Akash decides to return to India on the night of December 31, leaving behind his hopes of love in America. He attends the crucial loan settlement meeting where he makes amends with his friends and partners, rekindles his relationship with his father, and begins to rebuild his life.

Meanwhile, Kiara, reflecting on her profound experiences with Akash, realizes she truly loves him. Kunal, seeing her change, drops her at the airport to reunite with Akash, who is waiting for her. When she arrives at the bridge once more, she believes she will never see him again—until Akash surprises her. They rush to the sea, where Akash throws a message in a bottle containing a proposal—a gesture symbolizing hope and love. Kiara, surprised and moved, accepts the proposal, and the coast guard rescues the couple from the depths of despair.

Eventually, they marry two years later, welcoming a baby boy into their lives, symbolizing their triumph over despair and their new beginnings filled with love and hope.

This film is a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit, the importance of hope during dark times, and the possibility of finding meaning and love even after experiencing profound loss and hopelessness.
