What Is Afsar About?
The premise of Afsar in 271 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
Set against the rustic backdrop of rural Punjab, Afsar introduces us to Jaspal Singh, an honest and dedicated government employee whose integrity defines his approach to both work and life. Recently appointed as a Kanungo — a senior revenue inspector overseeing several agricultural land clerks — Jaspal carries the quiet pride of a man who has earned his position through merit. When Kashmiro, a well-meaning elder from his village, suggests he court her niece, Jaspal’s world begins to shift in unexpected ways.
Enter Harman, a spirited school teacher with dreams of marrying a man in government service. Their chemistry is natural and immediate, and Jaspal finds himself drawn to her warmth and conviction. But standing in the way of their union is Harman’s father, a stubborn and illiterate man whose approval hinges entirely on his daughter marrying a Patwari — a junior clerical post he has been led to believe is far more prestigious and lucrative than Jaspal’s actual rank. This misguided belief, stoked by outside voices, becomes the central obstacle to Jaspal’s happiness.
What follows is a story steeped in the textures of village life — its gossip, its hierarchies, its deeply held notions of status and respect. Jaspal must contend not only with a father-in-law who refuses to see his worth, but also with the weight of societal expectations that privilege the appearance of a government title over the substance of a good man. Balancing humor with heartfelt emotion, the film paints Jaspal as someone caught between his principles and his desires, determined to bridge the gap between who he is and who the world expects him to be.

The story revolves around Jaspal Singh, portrayed by Tarsem Jassar, a man known for his unwavering honesty and integrity. Due to his professional capabilities, he is appointed to the position of a Kanungo, which is a Revenue Inspector role overseeing five Patwaris, or agricultural land clerks. Within his village, he is highly regarded, including by Gurpreet Bhangu, who plays the role of Kashmiro, a senior lady and well-wisher. Kashmiro is very keen on seeing Jaspal settled and desires for him to marry her niece, Harman, played by Nimrat Khaira. Harman is a dedicated teacher at a government school who specifically hopes to marry a man with a stable government position.
However, a complication arises in the form of Bharpur Singh, played by Karamjit Anmol. Bharpur is a corrupt Patwari based in Harman’s village who also harbors romantic interests in her. Seizing an opportunity to manipulate the situation, Bharpur approaches Harman’s father, who is unfortunately illiterate and struggles with alcohol addiction. Bharpur lies to the father, deceptively claiming that the position of a Patwari is actually higher in rank and more lucrative than that of a Kanungo. Consequently, he convinces the father that marrying Harman to a Patwari would be the superior choice.
When Tarsem Jassar and his family formally approach Harman’s family to ask for her hand in marriage, the father rejects the proposal based on Bharpur’s lies. This creates a dilemma, as both Harman and her family members actually like Jaspal. As he prepares to leave, Harman encourages him to work even harder so he can eventually secure a post as a Patwari, believing this is the only way her father will approve. Jaspal, confused by the logic, responds with a point of practical reality:
hard work leads to promotion and not demotion, so how can he become a junior official when he is a senior official?
As Jaspal is driving away in his car, he encounters another man who happens to share the exact same name, Jaspal Singh, played by Ravinder Mand. This second Jaspal has recently inherited the post of Patwari following the death of his father, but his scooter has broken down, and he asks for a lift. During their conversation, the Patwari reveals his disdain for the government job; he prefers a lifestyle of idleness and drinking, provided he has a source of easy money.
Seeing a unique opportunity to win over Harman, the Kanungo Jaspal proposes a deal. He offers money to the Patwari Jaspal in exchange for his identity, suggesting that the other man disappear for a while. Since they share the same name and are strangers to the village, the plan seems feasible. After creating a fake ID card and securing the necessary documentation from the other Jaspal, the honest Jaspal plots his entry into the village. To clear the path, he uses the influence of a politician—who is the uncle of his best friend—to have the corrupt Karamjit Anmol transferred out of the area. Having successfully manipulated the circumstances, Jaspal reports to Harman’s village, posing as the new Patwari, setting the stage for the events that follow.
