A Star Is Born 1937

Farm girl Esther Victoria Blodgett dreams of becoming a Hollywood star, despite her aunt and father being less than supportive of her ambitions. Luckily, her grandmother provides her with some savings to pursue her passion.

Upon arriving in Hollywood, Esther quickly discovers that securing a job as an extra is far from easy. The competition is fierce, and the casting agency has closed its doors to new applicants. Disheartened, Esther learns that her odds of making it as an actress are a staggering one in 100,000. However, solace comes in the form of her new friend at the boarding house, assistant director Danny McGuire, who is also out of work.

In a twist of fate, Esther joins Danny at a concert meant to celebrate his newfound job, where she has a fateful encounter with her idol, Norman Maine, a veteran actor whose career has suffered due to alcoholism. Despite his struggles, Norman’s presence at the concert leaves a significant impression on Esther.

Danny secures Esther a temporary position waiting tables at a lavish Hollywood party. It is during this gig that she captures Norman’s attention. The next day, he enlists the help of his longtime producer, Oliver Niles, to arrange a screen test for her. Amazingly, Oliver is impressed with her performance and offers her a contract, giving her the glamorous new name of “Vicki Lester.” With her heart set on success, she rehearses for her first small role.

When the studio faces difficulty in finding a leading lady for Norman’s current film, The Enchanted Hour, he advocates for Esther, allowing her to shine as the film makes her an overnight sensation. However, as Esther’s star rises, Norman’s career continues to spiral downward, creating an increasing tension in their relationship.

In a moment of romance, Norman proposes to Esther, and she accepts under his promise to quit drinking. They elope quietly, away from the media’s prying eyes, and enjoy a blissful honeymoon in the mountains. As Esther’s fame escalates, Norman confronts the harsh reality that his own career is at an end, despite Oliver’s ongoing support.

Though Norman tries to remain sober, his mounting frustration eventually leads him back to drinking. During a pivotal moment at the Academy Awards, as Esther receives her Oscar for Best Actress, Norman interrupts her acceptance speech in a drunken haze, demanding recognition for “the worst acting of the year” and accidentally hitting her in the process.

A short stint in a sanatorium seems promising for Norman, addressing his alcoholism until a brutal confrontation with press agent Matt Libby triggers another drinking binge. Subsequently, Norman is arrested for drunk driving, leading to a court ruling that gives Esther the responsibility of caring for him, thanks to her success in Hollywood. In an act of love, she agrees to put her career on hold for his rehabilitation. Tragically, after overhearing Esther’s sacrifice discussed with Oliver, Norman succumbs to despair and drowns himself in the Pacific Ocean.

Devastated by her loss, Esther contemplates leaving the industry. However, her grandmother arrives with a letter from Norman, filled with love and pride for her achievements, reigniting her hope. Inspired by the memories of their time together, she chooses to remain in the film industry. During the premiere of her next film at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, when asked to address her fans, Esther confidently declares, “Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine,” forever honoring the love they shared and stepping forward into the spotlight.
