Shortly after marrying Louis, a French military officer, Jeanne faces a deep sense of solitude as he is sent to fight in World War II. While awaiting his return from a POW camp, Jeanne becomes involved in affairs with his fellow officers. When Louis finally comes home and learns of the infidelity, he forgives her and offers her freedom, but she declines, and they decide to stay together.

Seeking a fresh start, the couple moves to Berlin with their two twins, hoping for a new life. There, Jeanne meets Matthias, a German industrialist who falls in love with her. A third child is born, and soon after, Louis is summoned to the First Indochina War, forcing the family to return to France.

During Louis’s absence, Jeanne continues her relationship with Matthias, who has followed her to France. They attempt to escape with the children, but Louis’s brother foils the plan. Louis returns home and, trying to remove Matthias from her life, Jeanne uses her influence to move the family to Damascus. She even asks Matthias to go to Damascus and take her with him. When Matthias shows up, Louis fights him but is severely injured by Jeanne.

Back in France, the family is asked to endure Louis’s return to duty in Algeria. Haunted by loneliness and despair, Jeanne again seeks out Matthias, but he ends their relationship. Louis returns and meets his family, but he has to part again. During his absence, Jeanne dies without a known cause, but he later finds in her purse a newspaper clipping informing of Matthias’s death.
