Sidney Smith (January 14, 1877 – October 20, 1935) was a highly influential American cartoonist best remembered as the creator and long-time artist of the iconic comic strip The Gumps. Born in Bloomington, Illinois, Smith emerged during the golden age of American newspaper comic strips and became one of the medium's most celebrated figures. His career in cartooning began in the early years of the twentieth century, when he took over S.J. Thompson's Bungle Family strip and gradually reimagined it as the beloved The Gumps, which first appeared under that name in 1917. The strip became enormously popular, ranking as one of the most widely read comic strips in America during the 1920s and early 1930s, second only to Bringing Up Father in terms of national circulation and reader following.

The Gumps was notable for its grounded, slice-of-life portrayal of an ordinary American family, headed by the silent, lantern-jawed patriarch Andy Gump, whose stoic visual presence became a defining feature of the strip. The series mixed domestic comedy with commentary on contemporary events, fashions, and politics, appealing to a broad audience of newspaper readers. Smith drew the strip continuously for nearly two decades, with his brother Frank Smith assisting him and later continuing the feature after Sidney's untimely death in 1935. The strip continued for several more decades under his successors until it concluded in 1959.

Though Sidney Smith himself rarely sought public attention, his contributions to the comic strip medium were widely recognized during his lifetime, and The Gumps was eventually adapted across other media forms, including film serials and merchandise tie-ins, helping to establish the commercial potential of comic strip properties. Smith's work influenced later cartoonists and helped pave the way for the syndication model that dominated American newspaper comics for much of the twentieth century.
