Sean Peter Daniel (born August 15, 1951) is an American film producer and studio executive whose influence has spanned more than four decades of Hollywood history. Raised in a Jewish family in New York City, he attended the High School of Music & Art, graduating in 1969, and earned a BFA in film from the California Institute of Arts in 1973. In 1976 he entered Universal Pictures as a production executive, and by 1985, at just thirty‑four, he became the youngest production president in the studio’s history, a milestone that highlighted his rapid ascent. During his tenure he supervised the financing and production of a litany of culturally defining films, including National Lampoon’s Animal House, Coal Miner's Daughter, The Blues Brothers, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Brazil, Field of Dreams, Do the Right Thing, Back to the Future, Midnight Run, Born on the Fourth of July, Missing, Weird Science, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Born in East L.A., Fletch, Rumble Fish, Gorillas in the Mist, Darkman, and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. His knack for recognizing emerging talent and marketable stories helped shape the modern cinematic vernacular and cemented his reputation as a visionary exec. After leaving Universal, Daniel co‑founded Alphaville Films with James Jacks, launching a production banner that would give rise to the blockbuster The Mummy (1999) and its lucrative sequels The Mummy Returns, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, The Scorpion King, and The Mummy (2023), a franchise that has generated nearly two billion dollars worldwide. He also produced a diverse slate of titles such as Malcolm D. Lee’s romantic comedy The Best Man Holiday, Richard Linklater’s cult classic Dazed and Confused, the western Tombstone, Nora Ephron’s supernatural comedy Michael, the Coen Brothers’ Intolerable Cruelty, John Woo’s American debut Hard Target, and the rap‑music satire CB4. More recent ventures include the Guillermo del Toro‑produced horror Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, and the documentary Belushi. As an executive producer he has contributed to streaming successes like Netflix’s The Witcher, Peacock’s The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Amazon Prime Video’s sci‑fi epic The Expanse, and the crime drama Graceland, while also overseeing TNT’s Freedom Song, HBO’s Everyday People, and USA Network’s mini‑series Attila. Daniel’s enduring presence across film and television underscores his adaptability and his lasting impact on both commercial blockbusters and critically acclaimed projects.
