Who Is José Davert?
José Davert was born in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, France in 1874. Credited on films since 1923, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.
José Davert, born Joseph Honoré Davert on 6 September 1874 in the bustling port city of Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, was a notable French film actor whose career spanned the early decades of the silent and early sound film era. He embarked on a significant life journey when he relocated to the United States in 1889, where he would reside for the next 25 years. During his lengthy stay in America, Davert established himself as a successful entrepreneur, becoming the owner of numerous cafes and restaurants. Upon his return to France, fate intervened when he crossed paths with Pierre Antoine, who took an interest in Davert's situation and endeavored to help him break into the burgeoning film industry. Antoine first introduced Davert to Léon Sazie, for whom Antoine was working as a production manager, but despite Sazie's admiration for Davert's distinctive physical presence—remarking that he had a great head—no concrete film opportunities materialized at that initial meeting. It was only later, through another chance encounter with Antoine, that Davert was introduced to filmmakers Pierre Marodon and Gaston Leroux, who immediately hired him on the spot after learning he had no prior film experience. His debut role was the memorable character of Noël the Canadian in the 1918 production Mascamor. Throughout his career, Davert appeared in a variety of films including La Nouvelle Aurore (1919), The House of Mystery (1923), The Man Without Nerves (1924), and The Phantom of the Moulin Rouge (1925), showcasing his versatility across different genres. He continued working steadily in the industry through the late 1920s, appearing in films such as The Secret Courier (1928) and Figaro (1929). Davert passed away in April 1934 at the age of 59, leaving behind a modest but noteworthy body of work in early French cinema.
